NIS America's library of PSP games is about to go digital. Games like Disgaea, Prinny: Can I Be the Hero?, Blade Dancer and more are being transformed into downloadable games, available from the PlayStation Store. Unlike many other UMD archive games on the PSN, NIS America will be offering a special discount on these downloadables: 50% off. The promotion isn't set to begin until October 1st, when the PSP Go launches. The sale will last for one week, allowing PSP owners new and old to pick up some NIS games for $12.99 and less.

The critically-acclaimed strategy RPG Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness is going for $14.90 + $3.40 = $18.30 over at Play-Asia.com. Most places still have the game for $29.99. Be aware that while this is not the US version of the title, this Asia version has English text and menus and otherwise identical to the US release. Take advantage of this deal here. Another RPG from NIS, Dragoneer's Aria, is also $18.30. The game was released last year in the US and received average to negative reviews, so we might want to skip this one unless you really love RPGs. The Asia version (which is again, identical to the US version) is finally coming out October 2nd of this year, and you can preorder it here. [Via PSPHyper]

If you haven't gotten tired of Nippon Ichi Software's staple Disgaea series by now, chances are you haven't played it yet. This must be remedied. amazon.com is having a sale, discounting the game to $30. Of course, getting it used from the Amazon marketplace can save you a couple of bucks, but you won't get the free shipping. However, it appears that this reprint will take about a year to release.

  • Disgaea 3 coming to America this August

While Japan has had Disgaea 3 since the end of January, Americans can now rest safe in the knowledge that the game will be heading to America this year. We're happy to hear that the game will be heading west this August, adding another great game release to the burgeoning PS3 release schedule this year. There's no word on a European release, but that's one of the reasons why we love the fact that the PS3 is region free, right? Disgaea 3 features new abilities which allows the player to alter the terrain during battles. No doubt we'll be seeing plenty of screenshots and videos over the coming months, but there have already been several Japanese videos which are worth a look. Be sure to check them out if you're curious.

  • PSP Fanboy review: Disgaea Afternoon of Darkness

Jeanne d'Arc has seemingly opened the gates of a massive flood of excellent SRPGs for the handheld. Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness continues the PSP's onslaught of fantastic SRPG games, and this may be the best yet. This stellar translation of the PS2 original features a silky smooth framerate, brisk load times, a fantastic story mode, and a slew of extras that will have fans, new and old, rushing to get this game. Some may be unfamiliar with Disgaea's rabid fan base. However, it's easy to see why the game has such a strong following. This Nippon Ichi classic blends a fun, fast-paced story with a wacky cast of zany characters. The writing is incredibly sharp, wholly embracing and parodying genre conventions. For example, one of the earliest characters is simply called "Mid-Boss" by the catty Laharl. The stylish presentation and heavy use of voice acting certainly adds an appreciable amount of character to the experience. However, that's not the only thing that makes Disgaea so appealing: the gameplay will easily have you coming back for more. The game follows the typical model of all SRPGs, but adds many touches that make it unique. Due to the huge number of factors that must be considered in-game, playing Disgaea can feel like taking a class in university. While the game attempts to be approachable, it's clear that this is a game squarely for the hardcore -- the SRPG veteran. %Gallery-6345%

One of the biggest new features for the upcoming PSP version of Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness is "Etna Mode," a retelling of the original story from a totally different perspective. Etna, as fans of the original will remember, is one of the cuter and funnier characters in the game, and it'll be fascinating to see her retelling of the story. Now, even those that have played the original Disgaea will have no choice but to pick up this PSP re-release.

A brand new trailer for Disgaea's upcoming PSP-exclusive multiplayer mode explains the horrifying truth behind the cause of the fog of war. As the video shows, it's not caused by netherglobal warming, but rather the multiplayer options menu! Humor and gameplay clash in this revealing new video: watch for yourself!

  • Disgaea multiplayer to have neutral enemies, fog of war

In addition to the Geo Cubes and Demon Gadgets, Disgaea's upcoming PSP-exclusive multiplayer mode will feature some genre staples. First is the fog of war. As in other strategy games, players will have to move their units through the map to increase the areas visible to them. Going headstrong into a fortified enemy position will undoubtedly end in some doom. To add even more tension to the darkness hidden in the fog of war, neutral enemies can also be activated. Neutral enemies will attack both you and your opponent and are quite powerful (like Turok's dinosaurs, perhaps?). Willi you and your opponent both fight against the neutral enemies? Or will you hope that your enemies get decimated while you run away? %Gallery-6345%

  • Using Geo Cubes in Disgaea

Geo Cubes are crucial to the new multiplayer mode found in Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness. As you can see in this image, there are a lot to choose from. Geo Cubes are like magic/trap cards in card based games. Not only can they alter stats, they can summon units, destroy units, etc. Even when facing opponents that overpower you, Geo Cubes can turn the tides. In order to use Geo Cubes, you need to have Geo Souls. You can gain 1 Geo Soul at the beginning of your turn. Some Geo Cubes cost more than 1 Geo Soul to use, so you may have to wait a couple of turns to use a powerful Geo Cube. Some of the Geo Cube types include: Morning Class – Make 1 enemy in the Base Panel fall asleep Overlord's Wrath – Randomly destroy 3 units Reckless Chaos – Decrease all units' HP by ½ Fall Back – Send selected unit back to the Base Panel Dimensional Rift – Randomize all unit positions Neutral Pact – Cannot be targeted by neutral forces for 1 round First Strike – Destroy enemy Base Panel Expect more on Disgaea soon. %Gallery-6345%

  • Disgaea features Japanese voice acting, Etna mode

IGN recently got its hands on a preview version of the upcoming PSP version of Disgaea. Although the game is largely a port, they noted two new features that will certainly get the attention of long-time fans. The game seemingly has both English and Japanese voice acting in the game, a feature we're hoping will survive in the final build. Certainly, anime fans will love to hear the game in its original language. An additional mode, "Etna Mode," also provides a retelling of the story -- this time, from the perspective of the hot-headed Etna. According to IGN, "This perspective starts with Etna accidentally killing Laharl when trying to wake him up. Everything following that, it seems, is a spoiler for the main game, since you're suddenly privy to a great amount of information you wouldn't have known had you been playing from Laharl's perspective." Sounds like Disgaea fans have a lot to look forward to, even in this PSP remake. It's clear that the title is shaping up to be more ambitious than a mere port, and we're glad to see Nis America take the effort to add something more for its US release this October. • Disgaea vid shows off that SRPG action we love

Fan favorite SRPG series, Disgaea is making it's PSP debut via Disgaea: Afternoon of Darknes and GameTrailers has a new trailer that displays a brief battle. For people unfamiliar with the PSP vesrion, the title is a remake of the original Disgaea with additions and tweaks to the gameplay -- mainly the addition of multiplayer support. The graphics look really sharp (though the Jeanne D'Arc looks better) and gameplay look very true to the spirit of the PlayStation 2 games. The vid is a little short but displays a bit of the nonstop combat you'll experience when the game comes out this winter. With Final Fantasy Tactics, Jeanne D'Arc, and Disgaea all coming out within a couple months of each other, its going to be a busy year for SRPG fans.

You saw Final Fantasy Tactics' brilliant English adaptation. How does Disgaea fare? The enhanced PSP port of Digaea looks good ... although, according to a YouTube commenter, it appears that some of the voice actors may have changed from the original. We won't complain much, though. It took a lot of complaining, whining and hard work for Disgaea to make its way to the States. [Via High-Score]

We can't wait to get our hands on the upcoming PSP version of Disgaea. We're so excited, that we constantly scour the Internet landscape for new info. While we're jealous that PS3 is exclusively getting Disgaea 3, we do have some new Disgaea PSP info to help comfort us. The official title for the upcoming port seems to be Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness. For those that don't recall, the original PS2 version was called Disgaea: Hour of Darkness. Last time I checked, an afternoon consists of more than an hour. The subtitle change likely refers to the expanded and new content that is in the PSP edition. The only bad news is that EB Games currently has the release date in October, not August like originally expected.

  • Disgaea coming to the US in August

In their preview for the upcoming PSP version of Disgaea, IGN has let slip the release date. Tactics fans (like me) can look forward to the game hitting stores in August. While it was believed that the title was just a port of the PS2 Disgaea 1, it is in fact very different. Disgaea PSP has additional story elements, acting as a sort of prequel with more Etna bits. There will also be new gameplay elements, so even die-hard Disgaea fans will be kept on their toes. The lord of the underworld and tactics games can't come out soon enough.

Do you want to share your PSP-related fan art? Send us an e-mail. A new piece of fan art will be shared every Friday. This weeks Fan Art Friday submission is so sexy that I'm going to play strip poker with it.. This submission comes from Yuji 28 Go and depicts characters from one of my all-time favorite games: Disgaea. Since we know Disgaea is coming to the PSP in the US at some point, this fan art seemd incredibly appropriate. The above image depicts Etna and one of her Prinnies. The image is even more impressive when you consider it was made on an Oekaki board. If you like the above image why don't you check out Yuji's Deviant Art account and let him know what you think or just leave feedback in the comments section. Don't forget that next week I'd like to showcase one or more fan made versions of PSP-tan, so send in your art before next week. %Gallery-3450%

  • "Look forward to" Disgaea, says NIS employee

    02.17.2007

I had nearly given up all hope of Disgaea coming out to America. Although the game had performed well in Japan, NIS has been strangely silent about the possibility of a localized version ever reaching English-speaking shores. Well, blackIceJoe from the Gamespot forums received a cryptic e-mail from NIS, which hints at a pending release: "As for Disgaea PSP, We unfortunately cannot release much information about Disgaea yet ... but we can tell you to look forward to it. We hope this will give you some sort of idea. As for the Europe version, we do not have any information about it at this point, but we believe it will be coming out in Europe. Please check back with us within a few months to see if we have further information on the Europe version." The idea that this e-mail gives us is that Disgaea is coming. The only question is: when?

Two very random clips for you today. First up, we have a clip from the upcoming English version of the Disgaea anime, via Siliconera. As you may have seen, we really want the PSP version of the game to get an English release, and if that means getting people interested in the franchise as a whole, we'll do it. Too bad I'm not a big fan of the anime series. What do you think of this clip? Finally, acidmods.com does it again with yet another nifty PSP modification. This one: a clear PSP. It sort of reminds me of the clear Game Boy from back in the day. With a lot more horsepower.

  • Most ridiculous Disgaea interview ever

    by

    11.15.2006

RPGLAND had a chance to talk to NIS America about Disgaea for PSP, and why it's still not confirmed for a US release. While there were a few hard-hitting questions in the interview, the majority of this affair was very light-hearted, revealing the kind of humor the Disgaea series is known for. For example: RPGLAND: Will Disgaea Portable help one get chicks (or dudes, depending on who we're talking about)? NIS America: If Disgaea Portable doesn't score you some action, you're either not trying or hopeless. When talking about why the game still hasn't seen a US release, the people at NIS are quite candid: they don't know if they'll sell enough copies to warrant a localization. But, sorry NIS--hasn't this game been fully translated for its PS2 counterpart? It shouldn't be too difficult to bring this game over to the US! If you really want this game to come over, NIS is asking you spam the popular gaming boards: "Forum posts on major sites really helps. Also, another thing you can do is to spread the word that Disgaea is coming for the PSP." I think I've done my part in spreading the word. [Via 1UP]

  • Disgaea 2 characters in upcoming port

The upcoming Disgaea port on PSP is shaping up to be more than just a port. Will it have all the improvements fans are dreaming of? Most likely not, but Siliconera has discovered Disgaea 2 characters in the game's new bonus levels. There's no American release planned so far, but I'm sure you can change that.
