  • Dog Days of Summer: Step away from the iMac and nobody gets hurt

Reader Lee Richards was taking care of a friend's Jack Russell Terrier a few years back, and as you can see from the photo above, the pup had no qualms about making sure that Lee was playing with him and not the iMac. Says Richards, "Here is a picture of Bono, my friend's Jack Russell when I was looking after him back in the days of Mountain Lion. As you can see, he doesn't like to be ignored." If you have a Dog Days nominee to share, let us know via our feedback page (and please remember that the photo has to have some sort of connection to Apple and its products -- don't just send us a photo of your canine buddy). Unlike Rosie from a few weeks ago, who wanted nothing more than to get her human away from programming and go for a walk, Jasper the Vizsla puppy is perfectly content to sit in owner William Smith's lap and help him code. We can't wait to see the apps Jasper's programmed! The photo by Ellie's human Colton White says it all: Ellie's teeth are apparently not a compatible iPhone accessory... There's nothing more annoying to a dog than being as adorable as Rosie and having your human ignore you while he's coding. "I mean, come ON - it's summer! And there are things to do outside! You're just sitting there staring at that screen and moving your fingers while I'm over here being cute! I want to go outside! NOW!" For Rosie's owner Daniel Bogan, it must be hard to get any work done with that sweet face looking at him. Yeah, there's nothing cuter than a puppy ... unless it's a puppy that is sitting on a new (in 2009) 13" MacBook Pro keyboard. This is Kevin, and his human Don Jones says: This photo is from a few years back when Kevin was a puppy. I was trying to teach him to sit beside me while I worked, but as you can see Kevin didn't like playing second fiddle. He crawled up onto my then new 13" MacBook Pro and activated Dashboard. Three Macs later Kevin is still around. So there you are, hard at work on your MacBook Pro when you hear the pitter-patter of paws on the floor. You ignore it. Then you feel a nudge at your leg, hear a little whine. You still ignore it; you've got work to do. Then you look over to the side of your MacBook Pro and see this -- looks like it's time to go for a walk TUAW reader and developer Al Connelly writes "This is Remmy, he's a Basenji. I was working diligently on an iOS app that I was writing at the time and he was curled up in my lap as he usually does when I work from home. We had been sitting for a while when he just flipped his head over as if to ask "Break Time? Wanna go for a walk?" and I was able to snag a pic of it!" What do you call a Manhattan-based Maltese who's into using a keyboard-equipped iPad? iDog! Owner Nicole Beauchamp sent us this adorable photo of her pup, which appears to be trying to figure out if it wants to fire up Safari or Mail! TUAW reader Anya Mallon of Visual Candy Apps sent us this photo of her Great Dane assistant, DeeDee. According to Anya, DeeDee is our fawn Great Dane girl who lives / works / and plays beside us in Surrey, UK and she loves climbing up and peering into our iMac's especially to join us during a FaceTime call! DeeDee has our bests interests at heart and always lets us know when we have been working for too long by picking up her favourite squirrel toy and prancing around letting us know that its time to play out in the garden; or reminding us that meal time is fast approaching with a nuzzle. We are the developers of the iOS app "Uber Checkin for Foursquare" and DeeDee also loves to help out with app testing; she carries an iPhone4S with her (in a survivor case!) and she loves to checkin on Foursquare (auto checkin is perfect for her paws!) at her favourite places including her favourite park and the local pet store. • Dog Days of Summer: Max versus the iPad

Max (short for Maximilian) the pug knows he's the most important thing in owner Jyri Jokirinta's life, so he gets a little bit jealous when Jokrinta pays more attention his iPad than to Max. %Gallery-195302% As Jokrinta notes: "When this picture was taken Max got wild. My wife took the picture and tried to catch the moment when Max was jumping over my tummy while I was browsing my Facebook. Max the pug is a sneaky little pug. He always wants attention no matter what. If I try to have a relaxing time on my sofa with my iPad - Max goes wild. Not that I wouldn´t enjoy the 12 kilos Maximilian on my tummy but dude...give me some space will you." • Dog Days of Summer: Harry, the black lab from London

If you're ever reading one of the articles I write for TUAW and notice a typo, chances are it's because of this black lab. This is Harry ("Harold" to close friends), who lives with me in London. Whenever I'm writing he's usually sitting right next to me and will let me know it's time to stop and take him for a walk by bumping my arm with his head. Harry is pretty much the best dog you could ever ask for for so many reasons, but what's especially amazing is I've actually gotten him to successfully communicate with my friend's greyhound via FaceTime. If you've got a Dog Days nominee to share, let us know via our feedback page (and please remember that the photo has to have some sort of connection to Apple and its products). For security reasons we can't accept inbound attachments, so you should host the photo (Dropbox, Flickr, iPhoto Journals, etc.) and send us the link.

  • Dog Days of Summer: A blogger and his dog

TUAW blogger Richard Gaywood is admired by many in the Apple community for his insightful, well-reasoned, and often mathematically rigorous treaties on a variety of tech topics. But what his fans don't know is that Richard has a writing assistant who provides both input and editing expertise. When we began the Dog Days of Summer series, Rich was kind enough to share this image of himself with his assistant at his side. Regretfully, I have forgotten both the dog's name and breed, and I'm hoping that Rich's assistant will pop into this post and add that important information soon. [UPDATE: Rich here. I can confirm that my dog's name is Jake and that the commenters guessing at greyhounds and whippets were close -- but not quite there. He's a lurcher, a cross-breed of sighthounds with pastoral working dogs. They're quite common here in the UK, having originated in Ireland where they were traditionally used for poaching. Jake was rescued by the RSPCA from a litter born in 2004, so I'm not sure exactly of his ancestry; some border collie, and some greyhound, but also a bit of deerhound. You can see this in his size -- at almost 65 pounds, he's quite a bit heavier than most sighthounds -- and also his beard and shaggy coat. You can see more pictures of Jake and his sister, Daisy, on my personal blog.] We'll have at least one more picture of this intelligent [Rich again: he's actually as dumb as a box of hammers, but I love him anyway] pooch in the near future; meanwhile, if you have a photo of your favorite canine at work or relaxing with an Apple product, we'd love to see it. Please remember -- your submission has to have some sort of connection to Apple products... For security reasons we can't accept inbound attachments, so you should host the photo (Dropbox, Flickr, iPhoto Journals, etc.) and send us the link.

Mika is a Bernese Mountain Dog with a mission: watching video of puppies on his human's iPad. "Mika watching Bernese Mountain puppies on my iPad, complete with Steve Jobs' bio in the background (though don't know how much he appreciates the narrative). He actually climbed up when he heard the puppy vocals." Despite the protestations of cat lovers around the world, we're giving dogs a chance to show their stuff on Saturdays this summer. Our submission this week looks like a lot of fun; hanging out on the deck in the sun with a couple of canine friends (it appears there's another one laying on the keyboard from the tail sticking out at left) and a MacBook Pro. If you've got a Dog Days nominee to share, let us know via our feedback page (and please remember that the photo has to have some sort of connection to Apple and its products). OK, TUAW readers who are also dog owners owned by dogs. You've seen enough of our Caturday cats for a while, and now it's your turn to show us your iMac/MacBook/Mac Pro/iPad/iPhone/iPod-using canine. To start off this summer's dog days, we've gone out to a Tumblr that specializes in canine Apple use -- Pupertino -- and borrowed an absolutely charming picture of a Welsh Corgi who is excited about his new iMac and apparently wants his owner to set it up NOW! If you've got a Dog Days nominee to share, let us know via our feedback page. For security reasons we can't accept inbound attachments, so you should host the photo (Dropbox, Flickr, iPhoto Journals, etc.) and send us the link. Thanks to the Pupertino folks and to submitter luckyno3
