Top 5: Christmastime in Gaming
Ahh, Christmastime. Every year, we look forward to cherished traditions such as fighting traffic, stressing out over finding gifts, and even the occasional Black Friday trampling. Yet one would be surprised to learn that December 25th has a history which shares very little with frivolous lawsuits and Bill O'Reilly frothing at the mouth. Indeed, aside from its litigatious and hostile depiction on the news, Christmas is largely an excuse to shower our loved ones with food, presents, and joy. It's also an easy inspiration for a stressed columnist trying to finish his Christmas shopping to create a Top 5 list. As such examples of religious-based holidays are rare in gaming, this list will not be Nintendo-specific. For those who celebrate the date, I wish you a Merry Christmas. VC Tuesday: The Race to Endure Donkey Kong Country 3
Nintendo of Japan has slowed down the rush of Virtual Console and WiiWare releases this week, but the releases are still quite high-quality. Even the least interesting game is probably considered pretty good: Donkey Kong Country 3: Okay Guys I Think We Can Stop Releasing Donkey Kong Country Games Now, People Get The Idea. We're more excited, personally, about Enduro Racer, an isometric racing game in which you race your motorcycle against dune buggies across ancient ruins.Just one WiiWare game is out this week, but it's probably worthy of attention: Okiraku Air Hockey is like Arc System Works' Family Table Tennis, but for air hockey. Which means it's a fun and cheap Wii version of air hockey, which happens to be one of the world's most wonderful things.Virtual Console releases: Super Donkey Kong 3 (Super Famicom, 1-2 players, 800 Wii Points) Enduro Racer (Master System, 1 player, 500 Wii Points) WiiWare releases Okiraku Air Hockey (1-4 players, 500 Wii Points)
VC Friday: Nintendo plays Santa
Turns out that yours truly may have been hitting the eggnog a little too hard, as this week's PAL Virtual Console release update actually appeared back on Tuesday (a.k.a Christmas Day), rather than the usual Friday. Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble! is the sole title to appear on the final PAL VC update of the year, but it's a worthwhile addition, nonetheless, and superior to the second game in the trilogy to which it belongs, even if it does lack a playable Donkey Kong or Diddy Kong.
