YouTube wants you to make a music video for Elton John
Like many legendary musicians, Elton John didn't get music videos for some of his best-known songs -- they simply came too soon for the likes of MTV. Thanks to the internet, however, he's getting a second chance. YouTube is backing a competition, Elton John: The Cut, that challenges you to brainstorm an official music video treatment for "Bennie and the Jets," "Rocket Man," or "Tiny Dancer." There will definitely be some tall hurdles to clear. A trio of YouTube creators will screen the initial entries, and the resulting finalists will face scrutiny by John as well as long-time collaborator Bernie Taupin, DreamWorks' Jeffrey Katzenberg, music video director Melina Matsoukas and Moonlight director Barry Jenkins.
Elton John's Swarovski-encrusted charity iPod nano
Out to give the rumored MySpace MP3 player a run for its money, Elton John has launched his own iPod nano lineup, raising money for a charity close to his hearts and our own -- the Elton John AIDS Foundation. Taking his cue from the classy 'n' sassy Swarovski crowd, the players are bedazzled in the aforementioned crystals, and are available in black, green, orange, pink, purple, red, silver, or yellow. Available at Goldgenie and Selfridges, the 8GB version is going for £399.99 ($566) while the 16GB model will set you back a cool £449.99 ($638). Be sure to jump on this soon, as each color is only offered in a limited edition of 100. And if that weren't enough, Goldgenie is throwing in "Rocket Man: The Definitive Hits CD" with every order. Elton John signs an exclusive iTunes deal
Well, for a while, at least. Sir Elton John will release his entire back catalog of music - that's 30 + albums and over 400 songs - exclusively to the iTunes Store (ITS) on March 26. The ITS will remain the exclusive online distributor of this collection of music until April 30th, at which time Elton will (presumably) make the offer to other distributors. It's a coup for Apple, as Elton is a legendary musician, and a display of faith in iTunes by Elton himself. Now, as Infinite Loop points out, this is what many of us were hoping would happen with the Beatles' music now that their legal case with Apple had been settled, but it won't be the case. Anyway, if you're a fan of Sir Elton and you're looking to complete your collection, fire up iTunes on March 26th.
