  • New Sci-Fi gaming show takes the physical challenge

The Sci-Fi Channel has partnered with Samsung and Granada America to hunt down the most well-rounded gamer in the United States as part of WCG GameQuest, a new "elimination-style" game show. Besides bragging rights (and sore thumbs), the winner of the "competition series" will also walk away with $100,000 and trips to attend future World Cyber Games events. However, to survive the eight-episode tournament, contestants will not only have to stand up to the rigors of gameplay, but also real-life "physical challenges." We hope to see the gaming elite vie for superiority by plunging head first Double Dare-style into pools of slime when WCG GameQuest hits the airwaves in the first quarter of 2009.

  • The Price is Right does daytime in high-def

This summer, we had assumed The Price is Right had finally gone HD during the daytime, but unfortunately, it wasn't to be. Instead, we were forced to wait a few months until its 37th season began. As of this week, however, the fabled game show is back and clearer than ever in sparkling high-definition. Viewers will also notice a freshened set, bigger prizes and a new game as well. Add one more to the list of reasons your boss should let you work from home.[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

  • Virtually Overlooked: Irritating Stick

This is pretty out-there for a Virtual Console request, for plenty of reasons. Okay, so Irritating Stick is a PlayStation game, which is more likely to show up on the PS3 than the Wii. And okay, there'd be no point in doing it without Wiimote integration -- more on that later -- meaning it should be WiiWare or something rather than an emulated VC game. Also it's kind of annoying (the name is accurate). But none of that matters, because it's a game called Irritating Stick, and that's hilarious, and I want to talk about it. And if it would be good anywhere, it would be good on the Wii.

To learn all there is about something, you sometimes need to go to the extremes. For shovelware, we are about to boldly trek into the eye of the storm. Deal or No Deal has the lowest aggregate score according to Metacritic, narrowly edging out Homie Rollerz. But we need to give it a fair chance. We can't succumb to the self-fulfilling prophecy. And besides, as a poster hanging in my high school English teacher's classroom profoundly stated, "what is right is not always popular, and what is popular is not always right." Indeed, just because one nerd hates Castlevania 2 doesn't mean you should automatically define it as a bad game. Okay, I can't fluff this anymore: Deal or No Deal for the DS isn't as crappy as you expected. It's crappier.

  • The Price is Right goes HD in daytime, too

Some four months after The Price is Right made the leap to high-definition on Friday nights, the daytime variant of the famed game show has now followed suit. During today's first pricing game, host Drew Carey proudly proclaimed that the show was now airing in HD during the day, after which kids home from school and grandparents with TVs from 1982 celebrated and did nothing, respectively.[Thanks, Justin]

You know what? Not all the E3 news can be megatons. In fact, that seems to be the rule more than it is the exception anymore. But sometimes publishers try to slip a dud under the radar even after we just talked to them. Yes, we're looking at you Ubisoft. Well, we're looking at both you and the recently announced The Price is Right, coming to Wii, DS, PC and Mac in September 2008. You're lucky we're walleyed. The release covertly slipped into our email box is also notable for containing absolutely no details that you couldn't guess on your own. We'll leave you to it.

The recently rumored game show channel for Xbox Live was officially announced at this morning's Microsoft press conference in the form of "Xbox Live Primetime." TV producer Endemol has teamed up with Microsoft to produce the new massively-multiplayer game show channel, which will include a version of the semi-popular NBC show 1 vs. 100, complete with real prizes (no word on whether host Bob Saget is involved). Primetime is part of Microsoft's new "Live Party" community channel, which includes the long-rumored Avatars. No word on what, if any, other game shows will be coming to Primetime, but we're hoping for a version of Ninja Warrior that involves rampant button mashing.

And the Ubisoft mehware continues. Siliconera just spotted a listing on the site of EB Games for a game version of long-running quiz show The Price is Right. According to the retailer, the title will be released on the DS and the Wii on September 9th, almost 20 years after the game show made its videogame debut on the Commodore 64. Drew Carey's first appearance in a game is rather more recent. And that's not all, shovelware fans: Ubi has also snapped up the rights to create a game based on Hell's Kitchen, presumably starring mobile belligerence unit and ego-on-legs Gordon Ramsay. Quite how the company plans to include Ramsay's famously foul language and secure an "E" rating for the game is, as yet, unknown.

  • Nintendo supports Edinburgh Interactive Festival 2008

Nintendo UK, along with the Edinburgh Interactive Festival, are teaming up to offer patrons of this year's show a chance to try out some Nintendo products. The show itself is a 3-day event, which is held at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre, and will be conducted between Sunday, August 10th and Tuesday, August 12th of this year. We have no idea exactly what Nintendo will have available on the show floor, but you can bet the Wii will be there.David Yarnton, Nintendo UK boss, said Nintendo is "very proud to continue our support of EIF for the third year running. Edinburgh Interactive Festival raises our industry's profile into the wider cultural arena and celebrates the input, talent and creativity from all with a common interest in video games." EIFChairman Chris Deering also chimed in, commenting that "Nintendo's support of Interactive Festival in Edinburgh is great news and demonstrates an understanding of the importance of a cultural games event within the landscape of the world's biggest cultural Festival. Games and EIF have been embraced this year by Scotland PLC like no other year and the support of Nintendo is an important factor in encouraging these respected organisations' commitment to us." So, you Edinburghians are in luck, yet again!Having never been to the UK, we honestly don't know what to expect from these shows. Sure, the official website provides some insight, but we'd much rather hear from folks who've attended. So, have you been to EIF in the past?

Truth be told, The Price is Right has indeed been airing in high-definition for the past couple of weeks just as we heard it would, but we figured it prudent to affirm that yes, the famed game show is indeed now in high-definition. As far as we know, CBS will continue broadcasting the daytime mainstay in high-def after its stint on Friday nights is up, so be sure and set that HD DVR for all you folks holding it down with the 8 to 5 whenever.[Thanks, Jerry H.]

  • The Price is Right going HD?

We'll be straight with you -- we're taking this with a sizable bucket of salt at the moment, but we've received word that CBS is gearing up to deliver what's undoubtedly one of America's most recognizable game shows in stunning high-definition. We already knew that the network was planning to air a series of The Price is Right episodes on Friday nights here soon, but apparently, the half dozen primetime shows will actually be broadcast in 1080i. Reportedly, you can watch contestants come on down in HD starting at 8:00PM on February 22nd, but don't expect to see the show make the leap to high-def in its daytime slot until sometime in March.[Image courtesy of Yahoo, thanks anonymous tipster]

  • DS Daily: Born on TV

Popular television shows, for some reason, often seem to make it to gaming systems of all types. Not just game shows, either, but just as with games based on popular films, popular shows often get the gaming treatment as well. There are rumors of the Lost game heading to the Wii, and we recently ran across a press release for a DS game based on 1 vs. 100. It got us pondering things like that and Deal or No Deal, Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader? and more, and wondering ... who buys these? No, scratch that; we actually know several people who enjoy Dancing with the Stars on the Wii. The real question is: do you buy them? Have you ever? You can tell us. We won't judge you.

Go get your "You Might Be a Redneck If" calendar and mark today as the day we finally saw the Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader game. And, if it's possible to be disappointed by Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader, that's how we feel. The two screens we are shown are nothing but text and the game/show's logo. The text in the trivia question is presented as writing on a chalkboard, but uses a typewriter font. At least they didn't try to fake handwriting with Comic Sans or something.Anyway, the game sounds about right: 3000 questions, and you can get help from five fake children. You also have access to the helpful "cheat" options found on the show. Really, the only difference is that it costs you money, instead of giving you the opportunity to win money.

  • New Cash Money Chaos details revealed

Earlier last month, we learned the first details of Cash Money Chaos, Sony Online Entertainment's new SmashTV clone game show shoot 'em up, and even saw an video interview with gameplay footage. But before we go any further, I think we need to clear something up. Players won't take the role of Elvis, as previously reported; instead, they'll have the option of controlling Sonny, Cher, Ike or Tina. Yeah, I know it's disappointing not being able to control The King, but isn't Cher the next best thing?IGN's Jeff Haynes recently had the opportunity to preview an early version of the game, and he gives us some fresh details. The game has more than 50 different episodes (or levels); Each episode consists of three rounds; Five episodes will complete a season, and at the end of a season, players must face a boss; Players will be able to use 12 weapons, including a shotgun or laser; The game will feature three difficulty levels; Players can replay levels by using the Rerun mode; and Controls are almost identical to SmashTV (firing directions are mapped to the face buttons). Jeff said the game controls very well and can handle "dozens of enemies and projectiles on screen without any slowdown."Cash Money Chaos appears to be shaping up pretty well, and if you're a fan of similar games, you should find yourself right at home.(Via IGN)

Gamespot has a new video interview with Cash Money Chaos' lead designer. While the video doesn't offer any new info on the game, it does provide plenty of in-game footage of the game's bloody carnage. The designer compares it to Smash TV and Robotron, but with a crazy alien 70s game show feel. Keep this one on your radar: it'll be a mere $30 when it launches in Q1 2007, and it'll feature 8-player online infrastructure play with stat-tracking.

You play an Elvis-imposter in SOE's newly announced game Cash Money Chaos. And like the original Elvis, you are captured by aliens, and are forced to participate in a "twisted 70s game show." No, you're not going to be playing The Price is Right. You'll have to fight through dozens of enemies, killing everything in your sight. This "uber fast" shooter appears to play a bit like Robotron, if it suddenly turned into Robocop instead: making people's bodies explode in buckets of blood. The game will come with more than 50 levels, and include online infrastructure play for up to 8 players. If you're interested in some really brutal cartoon violence, and want to kill ninjas, hillbillies, clowns, pirates, and aliens, then you'll have to wait a while: Cash Money Chaos is coming "early 2007." Check out the official website to score some art and screenshots.[Thanks, steve!]
