Attention do-it-yourself home theater fans, GeeXboX 3.0 is now available. Primarily based off of XBMC 11, the latest software bump for this long-running Linux distro introduces a few nifty features, such as: PVR support for DVB-T (watch and record live TV), full HD video for PandaBoard systems, full HD support for CuBox and improved HDD installation. A year in the making, GeeXbox 3.0 weighs in at a hefty 140MB, nearly double the size of the platform's last official release. In addition to its new bells and whistles, version 3.0 has "preliminary" Raspberry Pi support baked into its development tree. So, if you've been plotting like Wile E. Coyote to build your next HTPC, then you may want to give this ISO a download. Update: Having trouble accessing the GeeXboX site directly? It seems to be running slowly at the moment, but you can also grab the latest ISO from Softpedia at the link below.

Last time we heard about GeeXboX, Palm was ushering out its first webOS phone, Google was putting the traditional navigation model in the grave and unlimited Skype calling over LTE was but a figment of our imagination -- two years later, and the aforesaid distro is finally reaching version two dot oh. Like version 1.2.2, the HTPC-centric Linux distribution allows users to decode media on dual- and quad-core systems, with added support for devices running ARM SoCs (like the TI OMAP4 Pandaboard and Tegra 2). The new 72MB version ditches the unique ISO generator tool, legacy HDD installation, support for V4L Analog and DVB Digital TV cards (although the manufacturer promises the last digital feature "will come back shortly"). Check out the source for full upgrade deets, and save us a seat on the couch, will ya?

Just a few months removed from its 1.2 update, the latest version of the GeeXBoX LiveCD has added multi threaded video decoding for MPEG-1/2/4 and h.264, which should finally let all users decode even 1080p video on dual- and quad-core systems running Linux. Otherwise there's some additional DVD CSS tweaks, updated MPlayer and codec support, so why not burn a copy and take a tour? Load it RAM, pop out the CD and run whatever discs and hard drive stored media your heart desires.[Via Softpedia]

A lightweight option in the media center OS race, GeeXboX gives a full media PC solution in your pocket by virtue of its Linux LiveCD foundation. Boot it up anywhere and access media on your hard drive, discs or on the Internet without reconfiguring your entire system. The 1.2 release throws in 64 bit support for x86 processors, HDTV and widescreen optimizations, plus a Win32 installer to load it to the HDD if you so desire. Pictured above is a peek at the upcoming 2.x interface, but in the meantime head over and give version 1.2 a try right now.[Via Softpedia]
