Acer Iconia Smart arrives in September, doesn't apologize for being late
Five months is a very long time to wait for the large-handed smartphone addict, but finally there is some good news, everybody! We previewed Acer's massive 4.8-inch phone / tablet hybrid back in February and it looked like it would arrive in the U.S. sometime in April. It's now August and and according to Acer's Facebook page, we still have a month to wait. The phoneblet (Yes, there's already a name) retains the same specs we heard about in February: Snapdragon processor, twin cameras and Android 2.3 Gingerbread. When it finally does arrive, it'll cost Europeans €499 -- around $710. [Thanks, Christof]
Acer Iconia Tab A100 delayed due to Honeycomb compatibility issues?
Acer was already kind enough to give us a heads up that it would not be launching the Iconia Tab A100 in May, as planned. But the company wasn't exactly champing at the bit to explain why its 7-inch, Tegra 2-powered tablet is taking such a tedious trip to market. According to a DigiTimes report, at least, the hangup comes down to compatibility issues with Honeycomb, an OS that so far hasn't been seen on many 7-inch slates. Specifically, the site's unnamed sources say Acer has encountered problems with certain applications and that Google, meanwhile, is "busy resolving other issues." All in all, precisely the kind of complication that Ice Cream Sandwich promises to circumvent. Oh, and speaking of delays, DigiTimes adds that the Iconia Smart might go on sale in July due to earthquake-related supply shortages. We asked Acer for clarification, but the company declined to comment, so it looks like we'll just have to wait and see what goodies late summer brings.

Acer promised a 4.8-inch, 1024 x 480 tabletphone would arrive in April 2011, and April's nearly through -- but don't cross off the Acer Iconia Smart yet, because that brushed aluminum frame has just materialized at our favorite government institution. Yes, the FCC laid eyes on radiation test reports for the Android 2.3 device, which reveal that the quad-band GSM handset is headed to both Canada and the US. Given that the North American version only has 850, 1900 and 2100MHz 3G frequencies, it sounds like a lock for AT&T. Inside, you'll find a 1GHz Qualcomm MSM8255 processor, 512MB each of ROM and RAM, an 8 megapixel autofocus camera with LED flash, a 2 megapixel front-facing cam, micro-HDMI output capable of 720p, a 1500mAh user-replaceable battery and all the usual 802.11 b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1 and GPS trimmings you'd expect. Now, Acer, how about a new release date?

Well, would you look at what finally powered on! Yep, Acer's brought its 4.8-inch phone / tablet to MWC, and not only is it finally ready to show off that beautiful 1024 x 480-resolution display but it also gave it a real name -- it's now the Iconia Smart. For those of you who aren't familiar with Acer's "100 percent phone, 100 percent tablet" that was introduced back in November, it packs a Snapdragon processor, Android 2.3, and is said to be coming to a US carrier sometime in April. Now that we're all up to speed on the details, we're ready to tell you that the device is a pretty cool one. It's obviously going to be for those with big pockets -- it's one long phone -- but the high resolution 4.8-inch widescreen panel makes it incredibly unique and nice for viewing pictures and movies. The actual feel of the phone is quite good -- it's made primarily of plastic, but the border surrounding the display seemed to be made out of some sort of metal. As we note in the video, the four buttons look as if they are flush with the bezel, but they're actually fairly stiff physical buttons. So, how's the software? Naturally Acer's taken to skinning Gingerbread a bit here -- there's an assortment of Acer widgets as well as that retooled homescreen you're seeing in the picture above.
