Sierra Wireless outs thinnest-ever 4G LTE module, teases skinny AT&T-ready laptops and tablets
One of the bigger challenges of spreading LTE has been size; going 4G has tended to put on a little weight. A new Sierra Wireless embedded modem, the AirPrime EM7700, could be just the ticket to shedding those pounds. It's reputedly the thinnest module ever made, at a tenth of an inch deep, and should slot into an Ultrabook or tablet without anyone making snide comments about the extra bulk. The EM7700 is still using the Qualcomm MDM9200 Gobi chipset that we spotted in the related MC7700 and Lumia 900, and won't have world 4G roaming -- in fact, it's explicitly tuned just to AT&T's LTE frequencies, so there's no question as to who gets first crack. Shipments are due to start in the last few weeks of spring and will make it entirely probable that AT&T's next wave of 4G mobile gear will have slimmed down a few belt notches.
Nokia Lumia 900 official: 4.3-inch ClearBlack AMOLED, 4G LTE, exclusive to AT&T
We're here at Nokia's CES 2012 press announcement and we've got the confirmation that everyone's been waiting for: the Nokia Lumia 900 is real. It looks like the rumors were true: the AT&T exclusive phone is packing a 4.3-inch ClearBlack AMOLED 800 x 480 capacitive touchscreen, 512MB RAM and Mango. Camera-wise, there's an 8-megapixel camera 'round back with a 28mm f/2.2 Carl Zeiss lens (likely the same as on the Lumia 800) with a dual-LED flash and a front-facing f/2.4 wide-angle lens that's great for wide angle shots. The polycarbonate-bodied 900 has a single-core 1.4GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon CPU inside, but the big surprise is that it's packing an LTE modem for all that high-speed internet goodness. There's a 1840mAH battery rated for seven hours talk and 300 standby. It'll arrive stateside in the next couple of months in those lovely black or cyan colors we've come to love from the 800 and no -- there's no word on pricing yet, but Stephen Elop did say Nokia would be "aggressive," make of that what you will folks. Qualcomm chips promises 1GHz speeds in 'mainstream smartphones,' simultaneous HSPA+ / LTE support
Qualcomm's Snapdragon has brought about a new wave of possibilities for smartphones, but evidently those chips are just too exclusive to slip into so-called "mainstream smartphones." In order to remedy such a tragedy, the outfit has today introduced the MSM7x30 family of solutions, which uses an 800 MHz to 1GHz custom superscalar CPU based on the ARM v7 instruction set. The chips support 720p video encoding / decoding at 30fps, integrated 2D and 3D graphics (with support for OpenGL ES 2.0 and OpenVG 1.1), 5.1-channel surround sound, a 12 megapixel camera sensor and built-in GPS. In related news, the outfit also announced that it is sampling the industry's first chipsets for dual-carrier HSPA+ and multi-mode 3G / LTE, which ought to make those champing at the bit for a speedier WWAN highway exceedingly giddy.
