Major Nelson has revealed the latest figures for Xbox Live activity, which once again sees Call of Duty: World at War being the most played Xbox 360 Live title. That's not to say it's all business as usual, as the Lost Planet 2 co-op demo managed to claw its way onto the list, along with a new Xbox Live Arcade pair, Shadow Complex and Trials HD.Both titles made it onto the top two spots on XBLA's most played list, with Chair's Metroid-inspired adventure making its debut in first place. The remainder is comprised of usual suspects Battlefield 1943, Marvel vs Capcom 2 and 'Splosion Man.

  • PSN Thursday: Marvel hugs Capcom 2

There's too much violence in this week's PSN Thursday, so we've nerfed where necessary. For example, in the above image: that's Spider-Man giving Ryu a knuckle kiss, while Wolverine does an airplane impression and Iron Man practices The Supremes' "Stop in the Name of Love." There's a lot of add-on content in this update for LittleBigPlanet, PAIN, Cross Edge and Dynasty Warriors 6, as well. There's not much else ... oh wait, there's a theme for Lingerie Football League. (Yeah, that got your attention.) Check out the full update after the break. Choose your platform to view the corresponding release list: (Note: Continue past the break to view both release lists.)

  • Marvel Vs Capcom 2 soundtrack strikes PSN next week

You may not be able to get one of these sweet vinyl discs, distributed at Comic Con, but you can get the next best thing. Capcom will be distributing this Marvel Vs Capcom 2 mix tape online through the PlayStation Network next week. We're hoping it will follow the footsteps of Street Fighter II's soundtrack by being zero dollars. The soundtrack will be a nifty addition to any PS3, especially because MvC2 is one of the few games that support the in-game XMB soundtrack function. MvC2 will be available for US players later today. Make sure you're one of the first 15,000 people to download the game if you want free one month access to Marvel Digital Comics (a $10 value).

Are you ready to be "taken for a ride?" You really don't have a choice in the matter -- Marvel vs. Capcom 2 landed on the European PSN today, pulling any who dare to boot up their PS3s into her slavering, ever-addictive maw. Then again, if you're in the market for a bit of edutainment, then LittleBigPlanet's "History Pack" sounds like it'd be right up your alley. Or, maybe you just want to incorporate some bizarre MMORPG microtransaction elements into your Madden NFL 10 experience -- you're set there, too. Man, what an all-inclusive PSN update! • Marvel vs. Capcom 2 retail package confirmed

Following a GameStop listing discovered way back in June, a forum thread over at Capcom Unity has confirmed the existence of a PS3-exclusive retail package of Marvel vs. Capcom 2, with a moderator posting the image seen above. One forum dweller confirmed most of the previously listed contents: the box does not contain a disc for the game, but rather a download code and some extras, including an eight-page color manual (that's seven characters per page!), 1-month subscription to Marvel Digital Comics and 2000 Capcom-Unity points. All this can be yours for only $14.99. Reportedly absent from the box is the previously listed media disc, unfortunately. Still, you get the game and plenty of extras for the same price, which is a pretty good deal. If you have the willpower to resist downloading the game the second it hits PSN, it's probably worth heading to your local GameStop. They should be on sale later this week. [Via Siliconera]

Major Nelson's latest battle report comes as a bit of a surprise as Halo 3 was the most-played retail game of last week. With all of the new Gears of War 2 content, we were sure that game would be at the top, but Epic's title only managed to claw its way to fourth place yet again. It was bested by the usual double dose of Call of Duty action in Call of Duty 4 and Call of Duty: World at War.On the XBLA side, the frenetic tag-based combat of Marvel vs Capcom 2 was too much for the competition. Capcom's brawler enjoyed top placement, finally bumping down Battlefield 1943 to second place. Coming in at third was none other than 'Splosion Man, Twisted Pixel's excellent follow-up to previous Arcade hit, The Maw.

The official stat site for Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is now live, and Capcom Unity has got a rundown of its features. Located at tu4ar.com (click the Gamercards section), the site tracks plenty of relevant stats for the game, including total combos, total snapbacks, one character victories, rating, rank and, of course, wins and losses. You can also compare stats with another player, and you can even look at stats for the last twenty teams you've played, which will showcase your most played characters and more. The site is currently open only for the Xbox 360 version, with the PS3 side expected to launch alongside the upcoming PSN release.Frankly, we're just excited to prove that three Amingos is the best team ever.

  • Microsoft will give you $10! (For spending $70 on Xbox Live)

    by

    07.29.2009

So, here's an interesting promotion. A press release just hit the ol' Joystiq inbox, claiming that those who buy all of the Xbox Live Summer of Arcade titles will be treated to 800, also known as $10 in Microsoft's funny money. This calls for copy and paste! July 22: 'Splosion Man 800 ($10) July 29: Marvel vs. Capcom 2 1200 ($15) August 5: TMNT: Turtles in Time Re-shelled 1200 ($15) August 12: Trials HD 1200 ($15) August 19: Shadow Complex 1200 ($15) Just adding those up -- carry the one --- that's a free $10 for spending $70 on Xbox Live. Keep in mind it's $10 you can only spend on Xbox Live (or Zune Marketplace). While the deal might seem silly at first glance, it does essentially boil down to five XBLA games for $60, the price of one retail game. And, as another Joystiq editor pointed out, that retail game could never be 'Splosion Man. It's a nice bonus if you already plan to pick up all the games. If you don't, you'll be saving money anyway. Everybody wins!

It's our pleasure this week to remind fighting game fans that their spirits can, finally, find some modicum of peace. At long last, their beloved Marvel vs. Capcom 2 will appear on XBLA this Wednesday, for 1200 (that's $15 for those of you who don't speak Microsoft-ese).So, with which pairing will you make the worlds collide first? We'd suggest Mega Man vs. Dr. Doom, if only because we love pretending they're battling for control of the robot race. Yes, we know Dr. Doom isn't a robot. Shut up.%Gallery-51288%

Capcom has released a batch of new media from the upcoming downloadable release of Marvel vs. Capcom 2 and this time it has a theme! That theme is apparently the battle of the "Mans," specifically Mans of the Iron and Mega variety. In addition to dropping tons of new screens and the montage video above, Capcom has released two strategy videos, one each for Mega Man and Iron Man.Granted, it's old hat for anyone that's played the game before, but, for those unfamiliar with the game, the videos offer a good idea of what's possible with different characters (particularly the Iron Man video). Check out the strategy videos after the break.%Gallery-68367%

Capcom sent out a little love letter letting us know that Marvel vs. Capcom 2 will hit, claw, blast and spin-kick the PS3's PlayStation Network on August 13 for $15. The release will occur two weeks after the XBLA version. The aforementioned date is also the one associated with the rumored retail pack for PlayStation 3, which costs $5 more, but allegedly includes a DVD with exclusive wallpapers, an 8-page manual, one month of free access to Marvel Digital Comics and 2,000 Capcom Unity points. We're checking with Capcom to see if it can confirm this now, as the publisher previously stated it "had no comment at this time."%Gallery-51288%

If you like to watch crazy high-level play in fighting games this weekend, but are among the few people who won't be in Las Vegas from the 17th through the 19th, you'll be pleased to learn that this year's EVO 2K9 fighting game tournament will be streamed online on Capcom-Unity, Shoryuken.com, and the EVO 2K9 site. From the comfort of your own home, you'll be able to watch people like national Street Fighter IV champion Justin Wong and the legendary Daigo Umehara deliver swift punishment to so-called "competitors" in games including Street Fighters III and IV, Soul Calibur IV, SSF2THDR, Guilty Gear XX Accent Core, and more. If you do happen to make it to Las Vegas's Rio Resort and Casino, you'll be able to play the first public demo of PSN/XBLA Marvel Vs. Capcom and more on the tournament's demo stations.

As if this Friday wasn't freaky enough, Xbox Live's Major Nelson has alerted us to a schedule swap occurring within the "Summer of Arcade" lineup. 'Splosion Man has taken the July 22nd spot previously held by TMNT: Turtles in Time Re-shelled, which will now release on August 5th. The full Xbox Live Arcade release list -- excluding next week's Monkey Island revamp -- is as follows: July 22: 'Splosion Man 800 ($10) July 29: Marvel vs. Capcom 2 1200 ($15) August 5: TMNT: Turtles in Time Re-shelled 1200 ($15) August 12: Trials HD 1200 ($15) August 19: Shadow Complex 1200 ($15) We're happy to experience Twisted Pixel's self-destructive efforts sooner, if only to ease us gently into a rather extravagant spending spree.

Further clarifying reports from nearly two months ago surrounding the release of Marvel vs Capcom 2 on XBLA/PSN, Capcom's Twitter account is putting the game's digital release "closer to the end of July." Oddly enough, the statement claims to not know where the "rumor" came from, though Marvel Entertainment's Q1 2009 financial report (sourced below) was clearly the culprit. In the month or so you have before the game releases, you should probably head over to Shoryuken's MvC2 forums to find out how badly you're going to get stomped online. According to a new GameStop listing, PS3 owners who want to purchase the downloadable Marvel vs. Capcom 2 will have the option of purchasing a boxed retail copy. Of course, like other boxed releases for downloads, there won't be a game disc in there, but GameStop lists a bunch of stuff that the box will contain. Basically, it's a Collector's Edition of a downloadable game. Oddly, there's no Xbox 360 version of this item.According to the product listing, the Marvel vs. Capcom 2 Retail Pack will release on August 13 for $19.99 ($5 more than the cost of the game) and include a redemption code (obviously), a DVD case, a disc containing exclusive wallpapers and other media, an 8-page manual, one month of free access to Marvel Digital Comics, and 2,000 Capcom Unity points, which are used on the Capcom site to participate in auctions.Capcom offered no official comment on this release, so this will have to remain unconfirmed for now.%Gallery-51288%[Thanks, Alex!]
