  • Beowulf gets mobile game from Gameloft

We've seen Beowulf and how it'll look on consoles, but we have no idea what to expect from the recently announced Beowulf mobile game. Gameloft, who has been having a very good year so far, will develop and publish the game for mobile phones, which is based on Robert Zemeckis' Beowulf film releasing Nov. 16.Considering we've seen God of War pull out a decent mobile game, who knows what we can get out of the epic poem with a 600K memory cap placed on it. The mobile game will release the same time as the console and handheld versions Nov. 16 to go along with the movie. Feel that marketing synergy at work.

A cute little email hit our inbox from Konami in regards to their press briefing taking place this evening, and should be interesting. Here's the poem:"What better way to end your dayat Konami's media briefing collecting...News for a major announcementyou were not expecting."Curiouser and curiouser, upon being confronted with this new information, our intrepid lead gave his best raised eyebrow akin to a well renowned Vulcan. The sign in for the briefing is in just over an hour, and we'll be there to bring you this unexpected announcement. Until then, rampant speculation ... GO!

Sometimes writing about the DS is kind of surreal. Like when we get to make a gallery of preview images for a poetry book. We doubt the Xbox 360 Fanboy dudes are doing that right now. They're probably writing about games. In addition to being as subtly beautiful in presentation as we're sure the original poetry is, Enpitsu de Oku no Hosomichi now appeals to us in another sense: it includes free junk. As a limited bonus, Success is throwing in a pencil stylus. Because "Pencil (Enpitsu)"is right there in the name.%Gallery-3547%

Here's a really cool non-game from Success: it's a DS version of the Basho poetry collection Oku no Hosomichi, (The Narrow Road to the Deep North) in a form where you draw over each character as an actor reads the poem. Enpitsu de Oku no Hosomichi DS is based on a similar book release, which featured the poems in grey print for readers to trace over, thereby forcing them to think about each kanji as they read. It's a beautiful idea for a book release, and equally nice-sounding on the DS.We know that it's basically an attempt to cash in on the non-game craze, but Enpitsu de Oku no Hosomichi DS is such a great idea that we don't care. More importantly, it makes a pretty strong case for the e-book, not only on DS but in general, with features that improve on the traditional print version.[Via Insert Credit]

Reader Chris emailed this to me-- he and his guildmates in Gnomeburgers on Suramar-H were running around doing the Valentine's Day quests together. One of them, an Orc named Gruulok, punched out a few lines of Orc poetry, and they are hilarious. (Yes, I know the image to the right is a Night Elf, not an Orc, but didn't you ever learn that Love is blind?)Sure, you might think that Orcs aren't very good at poetry, but I've heard my own Orc speak a few lines himself-- something about coming from the Orcs, eating with spoons and forks, and he loves to eat his pork. Gruulok's poetry is perhaps the best love poetry ever written in... well, I'm not quite sure what language this is. Orcish? If you're feeling a little Hordie (get it?) this evening, feel free to share these lines with your sweetie, and have a great Valentine's Day.Tru Ork luv leevez skarz an brewzez, an eben browken nowzez, but vilent luv iz much mor fun den duzenz o steenky rowzez. The Game Poets Society attempts to fill that void and longing in the heart for video game poetry. Do you dream to write emo about the plight of King Koopa or the existential nature of Shadow of the Colossus? Let the Game Poets Society give you an outlet for your talent.Game Poets Society creators Dan and Coop say putting your soul on display to be torn apart by your fellow poets is part of the joy and learning process, "We built the site around people being able to comment not on a forum, but on each specific poem ... we believe the ability to share thoughts on a specific poem is needed." From the Ode to Leeroy to Clubbing Baby Seals, the society has poetry for everyone. There are even poems with leet titles about Counter-Strike. Wonder if we should have done this post in iambic pentameter?

  • Apple employee gets fired for hilarious standup/poetry routine

I love the 'six degrees of everything' effect of the world wide web. I especially love it on a Sunday morning that is the second day of my spring break, as I have the time to check out this hilarious video of a standup/poetry routing from a talent show on the Apple Campus (thanks to TUAW commenter Mike). While the routine is a riot, what (apparently) came out of it is not: the employee says Apple's VP, who was hosting the event, fired him for it.I have embedded the video from Google Video in this post, and you'll need Flash to view it. I'd recommend actually going to the post at Google Video and downloading it while you can, before Apple legal attempts to obliterate it from the 'net.

Seems Apple has hidden a secret message to OSX86 hackers to find in the 10.4.4 build of Mac OS X for Intel. And this time it's in verse!Your karma check for today:There once was a user that whinedhis existing OS was so blind,he'd do better to piratean OS that ran greatbut found his hardware declined. Please don't steal Mac OS!Really, that's way uncool.(C) Apple Computer, Inc.Sure, it's not the greatest poem, but how funny is this! I've always loved easter eggs in software and this is the best kind. The people who run OSX86 Project site have offered up their own poetic reply to Apple. You can read it at their site.I humbly offer up my own poetic reply in the style of William Carlos Williams after the jump...
