Seen@GDC: The Winnitron 1000, featuring Super Crate Box
You've never played IGF Pavillion game Super Crate Box? Well then, let's fix that right now (it's free!). Unfortunately, if you weren't at GDC -- or aren't a resident of Winnipeg, Canada -- it's going to be a bit difficult to check out the game's two player co-op mode, housed inside of the wonderful and mysterious Winnitron 1000.
Seen@GDC: Yu Suzuki vs. USSR
We ... don't think he can claim all of these things as his "game works."
Seen@GDC: Homefront's free lunch
THQ's literal Homefront marketing machine, the "Korean taco"-peddling Pyongyang Express, has made its scheduled appearance at GDC 2011. Its "Subsidized Good Food for a Better America" is being (orderly) distributed free of charge -- although consuming it is, technically, eating away at freedom.
Seen(through)@GDC: The official shutter glasses
Some developers are making 3D games that require active shutter glasses. Some are making games that make use of (passive) polarized glasses. But all of the devs who attend GDC will have the opportunity to take home these static shutter glasses from the GDC shop, for $7. The 3D effect is stunning when looking at actual three-dimensional objects.
Seen@E3: DeLorean sans Doc Brown
While waiting in line for Microsoft's appointments yesterday morning, we were witness to any valet's dream: a DeLorean pulling into the drive. No doubt someone was attempting to travel back in time to avert the massive damage the Viceroy Hotel received earlier at the hands (wheels?) of a vicious truck. Unfortunately, it seems as though the scheme failed: the damage remains. In all seriousness, the car belongs to Ryan McCaffrey of OXM, who was understandably irked by the ensuing Back to the Future jokes. Before the valet could make off with the car (at which point he would no doubt attempt to reach 88 miles per hour "just to see what happens") we snapped off a shot of the interior. Check it out after the break.
Seen@E3: Microsoft hotel vs. Truck
Although the damage doesn't look that great, it was quite the little scene. While getting ready to see Halo Wars (more on that very soon), there was an extremely loud crashing sound in the Viceroy hotel lobby. Everyone in the room snapped their heads to look outside. Through the glass doors you could see pieces of debris falling from the ceiling and dust. What happened? Turns out a truck was a little too big for the overhang outside the hotel and took a piece out of the building. Good times.
Seen at E3: A message to MMOs
No beating about the bush from this MMO. Directly attacking your competitors may not be nice, but with a MMO cliché that's so ingrained in the genre, sometimes you have to be bold to succeed.Unless, of course, they had a lapse of concentration while typing Mr. Presley's name.
