Can't get enough Sunrise Earth? Fantastic. Discovery has just announced that it will be bringing its Sunrise Earth: Seaside Collection to both DVD and Blu-ray on June 11th, and judging by the sound of things, it looks to be a real winner for showing off the capabilities of your setup. Focusing on sunrises above crystal clear bodies of water, you'll find scenes from Maine's Acadia National Park, Australia's Great Barrier Reef, Polynesia, Costa Rica, Turkey's coastline, California's Point Reyes National Seashore, Ninagiak Island and a couple more locales for good measure. Of course, submersing yourself in such grandeur won't run you cheap, as the BD version will ring up at $59.95, while the lowly four-disc DVD set can be had for $10 less.

It's that time of year again, Sunrise Earth is asking its viewers what they'd like to see first thing in the morning. With BD Live-compatible Blu-ray players, piles of cash and supermodels out of the question, we can choose from ten possible sunrises, which will be whittled down to five episodes broadcast in the third quarter of this year. Each locale represents a vast improvement over our brick wall-facing window so we're not picky, but take a look at the list after the break then hop over to Discovery and tell them what you want to see.

If you've been strangely itching to get a closer look at the Sun without totally ruining your eyesight, you can color yourself quite fortunate. The aptly-named Sunrise project is an international collaboration involving a number of institutions that have successfully sent a jumbo-jet sized balloon some 120,000 feet high with a solar telescope riding shotgun. The plan is to send the massive device on lengthy journeys beginning in 2009 "that will capture unprecedented details of the Sun's surface," and furthermore, it could enable scientists to launch instruments up for testing without having to strap them onto a rocket and consequently destroy their budget. Set to take flight in the summer of '09 from Kiruna, Sweden, the balloon is scheduled to "capture continuous images for a period of several days to as long as two weeks," and no, you can't buy a seat on this one.[Via Physorg]

Anime fans are crazy. This is incontrovertible fact. They'll spend money on pretty much anything (last link NSFW) bearing the likeness of one of their favorite characters. But will they buy a DS card with a database of information about anime shows? Sunrise thinks so. They're ... probably right. If you've ever wanted to read background information about Gundam, Cowboy Bebop, or any of Sunrise's other animated series, in Japanese, and on your DS, then this program, whose title is something like Sunrise's Common Sense, Everyone's Lack of Common Sense, is precisely the product for you.

We don't get out much, so Discovery HD Theater's Sunrise Earth is one of the best ways to connect with the outside world. The show makes it easy to wake up at 7 a.m. and catch a sunrise over a stunning vista instead of an annoying clouded-over glare reflected on an LCD monitor. This year, they've decided to let viewers submit suggestions on what locations to shoot. If you think the world must see sun come up in 1080i over one particular spot that only you know about, check out MyPerfectSunriseEarth.com for info on how to submit it, for a list that will be whittled to 20 locations. Those 20 will be narrowed down to five by a viewer vote, and someone will win a trip to one of them to shoot their own sunrise alongside the show's producer.[Via PR Web]
