In response to ever-more dastardly IED technologies, America's personnel carriers have become lot more resilient over the past few decades. However the ability for armored transports like the MRAP to take a direct blast comes at the cost of their speed, maneuverability, fuel economy, development and construction costs. That's why DARPA has just awarded contracts to eight institutions for their help in developing a next-generation people mover that's lighter, faster, smarter and more nimble than today's trucks.

What would you do if you had a real Warthog, Halo's iconic vehicle of choice? The answer for most of us should be pretty obvious: whatever you could get away with. Fishtails, donuts, you name it. Just hope your CO isn't watching.

As the irreverent host of Top Gear, Jeremy Clarkson is used to hanging out with a near-mythical character that's obscured behind a shiny helmet. Commenting on Master Chief's fictional ride is just another day on the job, really.

As part of its line of RC Halo toys, NKOK will soon release a new RC Warthog. The hog sports a rocket turret -- though regrettably not night vision -- and includes figures of Noble 6 and Carter from Halo: Reach. The diminutive ride will retail for $25, but can you really put a price on childhood?

  • Thrustmaster shipping HOTAS Warthog flight controller this month for $500

Already got a tween of your own begging and pleading for a decent gaming joystick from Santa? It's a common issue, or so we hear. Thrustmaster's HOTAS Warthog is probably one of the nicest around, and it looks as if it'll be landing on American doormats in plenty of time to procure a sufficient amount of wrapping paper. The ultimate flight sim stick will start shipping out by the end of this month for a wallet-melting $499.99, but thankfully for you, we were able to put together a lengthy list of impressions during a hands-on session back at E3. And hey, if this one ends up out of reach, at least you've always got Solipskier.

  • Your custom-made Warthog isn't this good

Well, unless you work for Weta, of course. The Warthog above, as seen on Pixelated Geek, was made by a company called Custom Creations, and was built for the Halo fan film, Operation Chastity. That's right, it was made for a fan film. Not to put too fine a point on it, but had we been tasked with building a Warthog, it probably wouldn't even be as good as modified Power Wheels. Suffice it to say, it's pretty nice. To see some pics of the Warthog's construction process -- it took approximately a year to build -- head over to the official Operation Chastity website. The project begins filming in 2010.

We know a little something about adorable, so believe us when we say that this is, by far, the cutest, cuddliest Warthog we have ever seen. Created by flux83, the car is modified Power Wheels Chevy Silverado. It comes complete with custom windshield, hubcaps, chain gun and even the Warthog's trademark tusks. Check out a video of the Warthog in action after the break. While you watch, ponder what it's like growing up with a father whose hobby is making awesome Power Wheels mods. Luckiest. Kid. Ever. Why should your Avatar have all the fun with a Warthog prop? Available from NKOK, a RC controlled Warthog can be yours for a mere $25. So save that money you'd have spent on your Avatar and spend it on yourself. You're worth it! Later this month, NKOK will also release an RC Mongoose (that's the dune buggy-thing) and the Hornet (chopper-thing) for $25 and $35, respectively. Now, not to look a gift horse in the mouth but ... where's our RC Scarab? [Via 1Up]

For those within the vicinity of Sydney, Australia, the land down under, it might be fun to check out the Halo Warthog on display this weekend on Cockatoo Island. The car is the same one from Neill Blomkamp's Halo short Landfall created by special effects studio Weta. Although for many the idea of putting on their best Master Chief uniform and spending a couple grand to fly to Sydney isn't exactly a viable option, with any luck, a version of the car will make the rounds in the States for the Halo 3: ODST launch. No guarantee, but keep the dream alive, trooper. [Via Kotaku]

  • Real life Halo Warthog goes for a test drive

One lucky writer over at OXM got his hands on a working Warthog -- yes, of Halo fame -- and he was good enough to snap some pics for us, even though we suspect that he's actually rubbing 'em in our faces. Because seriously, this is one helluva ride. And seriously, we're like totally jealous. Based on a Nissan Patrol 4x4 truck platform and built for Peter Jackson's abandoned Halo film, this is not a prop -- rather, its a fully working beast. The six-cylinder, diesel, automatic bad boy sports full four-wheel drive, a custom chassis, and for the lucky driver they do have a set or two of United Nations Space Command Marine armor available. This vehicle is currently billeted in New Zealand, so if you're in the area stop in and ask for a ride. What could it hurt? And tell 'em Engadget sent you. More pics after the break.

You're familiar enough with us to know that we love a good video game themed LEGO creation every once and a while. So, when we spotted a new custom LEGO masterpiece over at HBO, we felt a compulsive urge to share it with youThe LEGO sculpture featured above (fully viewable after the jump) is the work of Nannan Z. who was inspired to create Halo 3's final warthog run out of LEGOs complete with airborne warthog, a falling platform and flaming fire below. Look close enough and you'll even spot a Sentinel laying waste to one of those damn popping infectious Flood forms. Blow 'em up Sentinel, blow 'em up good! We say fine job Nannan and now we think you're ready to take the next creative jump in your career by moving on to build life size Halo 3 warthog run models. We're sure WETA would be willing to lend a hand if you ask nicely.[Via HBO]

  • Tabula Rasa mission designer Wynne McLaughlin interviewed

Wynne McLaughlin, one of the mission designers for Tabula Rasa, was recently interviewed by MMORPGslave to find out a bit about his background, and his involvement with the game. It turns out that he was previously working at a studio called Warthog that was bought by Gizmondo -- and you probably know how that story ends. But fortune intervened, and on the day that his studio shut down, NCsoft gave him a buzz and hired him to his current position. The interview covers his gaming interests of the past and present, other influences on his work (he was in screenwriting before the games industry), and what he likes and is proud of in TR: "On a personal level, I'm proud of my 'ethical dilemma' missions, and especially the 'Penumbra' black ops mission arc, which started out as a simple idea and ended up becoming a major part of the game's meta-story. I was also very pleased with opening cinematic and the in-game movies, which I had the opportunity to write."Check out the full MMORPGslave interview at the link below.

  • Today's trickiest warthog jump video: Halo: The Three Towers: Revisited

When given an opportunity to use three colons in series while maintaining grammatical correctness, we can't resist. Moving on, the other night's Skate trick video made us think of older -- but not yet retro -- uses of over-the-top Physics. When people ask why we are so excited about Forge and Gravity Hammers in Halo 3, we tell them it's because of our warthog jumping addiction. How do you warthog jump, exactly? It's simple, all you need is a few dozen grenades and a good grasp of trajectories. After the break, 30 minutes of truly clever jeep-launching excitement -- seriously, we don't want to imagine how much time was wasted in the making of this film.

This past Friday, in Bungie's Weekly Update, Frankie mentioned that part of the Bungie crew was visiting the WETA studios over in New Zealand and got a chance to drive a real life, fully functioning, chaingun turret sporting Warthog of awesomeness. But as everyone knows, anytime you mix the Bungie crew with big, dangerous toys there is bound to be accidents. And their Warthog test drive was no exception. Halo producer Curtis Creamer was in charge at the wheel and while accelerating through the parking lot he managed to sideswipe one of the studio buildings. Even better than a Warthog running into a building is the fact that the accident was caught on tape and embedded above for you to enjoy. Maybe next time the Bungie crew will take a few Warthog driving lessons and wear some noggin protection too.

With the recent release of super high-res screenshots of Halo 3, you can see lots and lots of detail ... including an easter egg. If you look closely at the image above you'll see on the inside of the warthog tire the text "PUMA", an obvious reference to those silly guys over at Red vs Blue. • First look at Halo Movie Warthog?

Tipster Doug explains the provenace of a video that might be the first glimpse of a Halo movie Warthog (Feel free to blink -- it's not an action shot):My friend in Wellington was on a guided tour, while driving past a WETA owned backlot she spotted a giant car being put through its paces. She recognised the front of the car and its size as the warthog from the Halo video games. She took one sneaky picture when it parked and emailed me it immediately knowing my interest in halo.I excitedly posted it on the Bungie.net forums and within an hour it had been removed, and in my inbox was a message from a moderator telling me I would be blacklisted for posting any kind of leaked pictures. Which leads me to believe its authenticity.Banned by Bungie or not, it looks kinda factory for a Warthog. Take it for what it's worth.
