The Elder Scrolls Online's beginning experience will become optional, as ZeniMax is making a significant change to allow players to skip over it entirely. The latest build on the public test server now gives players the option to bypass the starter islands and the connected tutorial. They can do this by talking to an NPC, after which their character will be taken to a central city. The starter zones have been subject of criticism by some press and players for being too slow and plodding. According to the patch notes, players who choose to skip it can go back and experience the starter island at their leisure.

  • The Daily Grind: I would like to have been there

Launch day, whether it's for a new game or just a new expansion, is usually a pretty crazy time. Everything is new and untested, which means that some builds and classes will be overpowered, some elements of the game aren't working as intended, and there are going to be bugs. But even with all of that, there's something that only can be found in that rush toward the new classes, new level cap, new areas, or even just to see the most of the world in a short span of time. The game is never new again, after all. With our current amount of knowledge about every facet of a game's release schedule, not to mention plenty of open and closed betas to get pre-launch information, we're generally able to be there for any game we want on the ground floor. Still, there are probably games from yesterday that you missed for whatever reason, or games that you didn't play then that you can't play now. What game do you wish you had been involved with from the beginning? Is it a game whose updates massively changed how it worked, a game that didn't last as long as you'd like, or one that's still going but just wasn't on your list back then?

Malkavius of Korialstrasz posed an interesting question in the General Forums. Is it too late in WoW's life for new players? She told a tale of how a friend got frustrated soon after purchasing the game because of inflation and an inability to find groups. The responses were split. Vylaria of Ch'gall believes that it's not too late for a rookie to get their start. Gathering skills help to boost the personal pocketbook, and even veteran players that reroll face the same problems with finding a group. Cptobvious of Bonechewer believes that it is easier for folks that have played other MMOs than it is for online gaming virgins.

How is it that I've never played Puzzle Pirates? Since its inception, folks around the 'Net have been extolling its virtues. Have I just been too busy? Too involved in making money, feeding my family, spending facetime with friends? What's wrong with me?With this post, I'll be rectifying all that. I'll be starting up my new career with Puzzle Pirates and documenting it every step of the way with my impressions, accompanied by screenshots. While this may be old hat to some of you, perhaps it'll help the rest of you determine whether or not life on the high seas is worth your time. Avast, ye scurvy dogs! Strike the mainsails or I'll keelhaul the lot o' ye!

We love talking about the past around here, because so many of our first loves influence our gaming habits today. We've asked what got you started and when you fell in love with the DS, but we want to ask about the first game that really hooked you. For some, it'll be the first game you ever played, but for others, maybe not. But it's likely to be the game you remember the most. So what did it for you?

  • Resources for beginning paladins

Defenders of the Light, mace-wielding upholders of justice, and hard to kill; paladins are the only Alliance-specific class, and a great newbie class to play. A paladin can take damage, dish it out (although more slowly than DPS classes like the rogue or mage), all the while healing, resurrecting and buffing their party. With the upcoming 1.9 patch, paladins are going to see some changes, but the first few levels won't change much, so here are a few things to get newbie paladins going:Infoceptor lists all the paladin's spells, including costs.Rampage's guide has a lot of general discussion of paladins, but also walks you through the first few levels as a human pally.WoWHealers has a basic FAQ covering race, talents, acronyms and more.TenTonHammer's guide is a good overall resource and promises a 1.9 update.Hester's PvP guide is useful, although you may want to try different strategies as well. The official forums are rich with 1.9 information and the European forums feature a guide.Paladins seem to have fallen into disfavour at the moment, but as a generally good all-round class they are fairly easy to solo with (if you have the patience to wait through the low damage output) and valuable to groups, as well as easy to get the hang of. My second ever character was a paladin and I really enjoyed taking her through instances and the like. Enjoy.[[Previous classes: Mage, Priest, Druid, Hunter]
