Those who don't learn from their past are doomed to replay it again and again. In the case of these games from Joystiq's "Best Of" lists from 2006 through 2008, that's not really a bad thing. As we celebrate our decade of existence, it seemed like the right time to look back at the games we thought were the greatest in their respective launch years. (The 2004 and 2005 lists remain classified.) In some cases, our selections are part of franchises that have stood the test of generations, while others are like trying to recall what happened after that fourth Red Bull with a Mountain Dew chaser. Here are our selections and links to explanations to the best ghosts of Joystiq's past.

As another orbit around the sun comes to a close the inevitable 'Best of' lists are starting to spring up everywhere. Apple, not wanting to be left out in the cold has compiled a number of Best of 2006 lists: Music Podcasts (Staff favorites, and the People's choice) TV shows The Music and TV show sections have a number of subsections which include best sellers, as well as staff favorites. What has been your favorite iTunes purchase of this year? Mine has to be the season pass to Frisky Dingo (which is not appropriate for all ages).

It's an idea that, frankly, we wish we had thought of first -- and that's not to say we won't do it anyway, nyah! -- but the O'Reilly Mac DevCenter squad has posted a few candidates for the top applications of 2006. With ten deep-thinking and developer-focused geektributors (including our own Erica Sadun), the nominated apps tend toward the utilitarian: Apple Remote Desktop, Parallels, a smattering of QuickTime codecs and audio tools, and popular favorite Yojimbo. For my money, Todd Ogasawara has picked it right with Parallels. There's no other product with the impact, press/blogosphere attention, and overall buzz of the multi-OS virtualization app that could. Who knows... perhaps next year we'll be talking about VMware and SketchFighter Alpha as the best apps around. What's your favorite application from the past 353 days? Let us know below.

  • USA Today: Gaming's best and worst of 2006

USA Today published their critique of the best and worst 2006 had to offer in the video game industry. Not that these kinds of articles aren't a dime a dozen now a days, but it's an interesting read no matter. A few interesting highlights would be awards for Best First-Person Shooter going to Gears of War (shouldn't that be best second person shooter?), Best Game going to Oblivion, and the Playstation 3 taking home the Worst Console Launch of 2006 award (stiff competition). We're also intrigued by the Worst Industry Trend award going to micro-payments, which I'm sure most people would agree with. Although, micro-payments aren't that big of a deal as long as they are of value and aren't overpriced ... damn horse.[Via Digg]
