New York Times to launch bestseller list for e-books in early 2011
The New York Times has dropped some PR on us this morning, making an official announcement that it will begin to publish a bestseller list for e-books in early 2011. The current NYT bestseller lists -- which are divided into several categories -- are considered by many to be the definitive metric for a book's success. The Times will have two separate lists covering fiction and non-fiction when it launches, drawing on information from various retailers, and will be independently verified by third party company RoyaltyShare. The list will appear in both the print and online editions of the paper. The full press release is below
Book Review: You Are Not a Gadget
You Are Not a Gadget: A Manifesto by Jaron Lanier (January, 2010) Alfred A. Knopf, 209 pages, $24.95 I'm often accused of being a Luddite -- mostly based on my fervent and affectionate clinging to several physical objects that are quickly becoming cultural artifacts: the ink pen, the paper book, and the vinyl record -- but those items haven't been the only 'evidence' my accusers have historically cited. In addition to that physical evidence, there has always been my suspicion that some of the things I valued in life -- listening to a whole album, reading an entire novel in one sitting before grabbing another off the shelf -- were also going the way of Betamax, and being replaced by short attention-spanned, sound-bited fragments of conversation that didn't convey knowledge or ideas in nearly the same way. This suspicion, this "feeling" if you will -- obviously doesn't originate with me, and it's often diluted (by the internet) into some version of "the internet is making us dumber" argument. Of course, that's not really the argument at all, but who needs to be bogged down with details these days? Enter You Are Not a Gadget, which I review below.
Book review: Second Life In-World Travel Guide
Second Life In-World Travel Guide is a book written by Sean Percival (Sean Voss in Second Life -- previously covered here), published by Que. I recently got a copy and was unable to put it down. Now, this was partly because it's photo-heavy, but also because it's pared down to the absolute necessities of the information you need to make the most out of your SL experience. This is a good thing. With a guide book like this, you don't want a great deal of exposition; you want to find what you need and go, and this book accomplishes that task with style.While it may seem like a rather slim volume, you'll discover that this is because the content offers up only the best of the best in shopping, entertainment, education, the real world mirrored in SL, adult areas, and locations to set up your second home. Each of these is given its own section, color-coded for easy navigation. The index in the back of the book is also handy for quickly locating exactly what you need.
