According to Bloody Disgusting, sources have confirmed that the troubled Castlevania film has officially been doused with holy water and staked through the heart. Details are sparse, with the site saying only that the project has entered "development hell." We're not film industry experts, but that sounds bad. Given that the film has already been delayed twice by both the writers' strike of 2007 and the spectre of an actors' strike late last year, it's not too surprising to see the film get canned at this point. For now, it looks like Dracula will stay in his coffin (for once). It's possible that an E3 reveal of the new PS3 / 360 title could spark some new interest in the film, but maybe we're better off leaving the whip-less adaptation in the ground.[Thanks, Daniel]

We're fairly certain that we all now know the many weaknesses of vampires: stakes, crosses, garlic, and obsessive, lonely teenage girls. However, we're just now starting to figure out the secret to slaying vampire-centric game-to-movie adaptations (namely, Paul W.S. Anderson's whipless cinematic stab at Castlevania); a force more powerful than holy symbols or tiny, smelly onions -- the unrelenting stoppage of work by entertainment labor unions.Last December, when the writer's strike had cast a shadow of boredom over the land, the film was indefinitely postponed. Production started back up when said strike ended -- but with the entertainment industry currently staring down the barrel of a Screen Actors Guild strike, work on the Castlevania film has been "derailed". According to an IGN interview with Anderson, future plans for the film won't be decided until the SAG strike has been resolved. Also in said interview, Anderson confirms that he's taken himself off of the Rock-infused Spy Hunter film, due to the script being just as terrible as you'd expect it to be. Unlike Castlevania, which Anderson claims to be quite smitten with and wishes to finish, this is probably the last we're going to hear of Spy Hunter's potentially Oscar-worthy silver screen adaptation.

  • Castlevania movie drops whip for sword

Despite two-year-old assurances that "the whip is still in it" it seems that, if an early script review is any indication, the Belmont's signature weapon has been knocked down to bit player in the Castlevania script by Paul W.S. Anderson, who has seen fit to make Simon live by the sword. Here's the word from CC2K writer "Big Ross" who says "Though I said Vampire Killer is gone from this script, Simon does wield what is described as a chain whip in two instances. However, it is nondescript and in one of the occasions is wielded as an off-hand weapon. So what is Simon armed with throughout the film? A f***ing sword."No, that doesn't sound particularly encouraging to us. But, hey, at least the rest of the script review is almost entirely negative.[Via AICN]
