See, mom? Video games do encourage reading. The novel Halo: Contact Harvest, which was released October 30, has this week landed on The New York Times' Best Sellers list for Paperback Trade Fiction, just behind Gabriel García Márquez's Love in the Time of Cholera and Sara Gruen's Water for Elephants. Contact Harvest was written by Bungie's Joseph Staten and tells of the human race's first encounter with the Covenant. Next week's bestseller list has already been tabulated it seems, as the Paperback Trade Fiction list for November 25 places Contact Harvest in the number four slot, swapping places with Khaled Hosseini's The Kite Runner.

Exciting novel sales news kids! Joseph Staten's first Halo penned novel has debuted on the NY Times Bestseller List. Halo: Contact Harvest, a prequel to the Halo story we've all come to know, made it onto the Best Seller List at number three and twenty-third on the USA Today's Bestseller List. Congrats Mr. Staten, you writing machine you. You've not only helped get a Halo novel onto the Bestseller List (only the second to do so), but you've also helped grow both Microsoft and Bungie's ever growing Halo franchise bankroll. $300 million just isn't enough ...

It's a good day for Halo fans, folks. Not only did Bungie reveal our Halo 3 Halloween surprise, but the latest novel in the franchise was released today. Titled Contact Harvest, the novel chronicles the life of Avery Johnson, better known as the invincible Sergeant Johnson in the Halo games. In honor of the release, the novel's author (and Grunt voice actor extraordinaire) Joseph Staten has placed the prologue on Bungie.net. Yes, the entire prologue. Head on over to Bungie.net to give it a read. Once you've done that, do your civic duty and buy the full novel at your local bookseller. It's the right thing to do.[Thanks, Mitchell Dyer]

Sergeant A.J. Johnson is easily one of Halo's most iconic characters, and we're sure fans will be delighted to know that the latest novel in the franchise centers around the charismatic character. Oh, and we should probably mention that the book is officially debuting next month. The book will be released on October 30th to be exact, one day shy of Halloween, though so far we have failed to make any significant connections to ghosts and goblins. The novel is penned by Bungie lead writer Joeseph Staten. Halo fans will also recognize Staten as the voice actor for many of the series grunts. In a way, players have been killing Staten for years. We wonder how he feels about that. We're sure he'll feel better if everyone buys the book.

This week's Bungie Weekly Update is full of witty banter between Luke and Frankie, a lack of Mister Chief and the cover art for upcoming Halo novel Contact Harvest. The novel's cover art, as seen above and even larger after the break, features Sgt. Johnson sporting some badass shades, his iconic cigar and is looking more ripped than ever. Indeed, the cover may be one of our favorites coming oh so close to our Ghosts of Onyx and its bubbly Spartan helmet dude. Contact Harvest will be available this October and is a a prequel to the previous novels telling the story of how the covenant came to be and how war on humanity began.

Bungie.net has announced the next book in the Halo series of novels. The next book in the series will be titled Contact Harvest and will detail the period of first contact between humans and Covenant. The book will be written by Bungie's own Joseph "voice of the grunt" Staten. As a head writer for both Halo and Halo 2, Staten is more than familiar with the material. We only know a few more things about the story: There won't be Spartans (too early in the timeline) There will be familiar Covenant characters (no Arbiter) The main human character is none other than Sergeant Avery "A.J." Johnson Are you listening? The main human character is Sergeant freaking Johnson! Contact Harvest is due this fall. Whether it hits before or after Halo 3 remains to be seen. Hit the "read" link for an interview with Joe Staten on Bungie.net.
