It's very easy to roundly dismiss a game that most people don't think is very good -- heck, we do it all the time. But we think before you make with the lambasting, you should have to read a postmortem article, like this one on Gamasutra from 8monkey, the developer of Darkest of Days. Where many terrible games just appear to be rush jobs, the folks working on Darkest of Days (which hovers between a 45 and 52 on Metacritic, depending on platform) seem to be a nice enough group just doing the best with what they had (which, of course, was not enough money, time nor manpower). A compelling postmortem isn't going to make Darkest of Days a better game (it's a long ways off from that), but maybe it'll make us all slightly nicer people.

With some incredibly brutal reviews to its name, Darkest of Days has to work extra hard to sway consumers with a new Xbox Live demo. It appears the game's time-traveling protagonist, tasked with saving certain people for the sake of history, has little to work with outside of a fun premise. Is using modern weaponry during the American Civil War as fun as you'd expect it to be? Don't let us stop you from finding out! (Spoiler: it isn't)Queue up the Darkest of Days demo%Gallery-22012%

With the Darkest of Days set to begin September 8th, a new trailer shows us the difference between using a "standard" weapon in the game's various historical settings and some more ... modern weaponry. The three settings in the clip are the ones we've repeatedly seen, so we're not sure if those are the only ones in the game, or if Iowa-based developer 8monkey Labs is keeping a couple of secrets before the release. Although the game will release on both Xbox and PC, a demo is only available for the mouse-and-keyboard set right now. If you've played it already, let us know what you think! %Gallery-22012%

The PC demo for Darkest of Days syncs with our timeline tomorrow, August 11. The demo will take players to Custer's Last Stand at Little Bighorn and the American Civil War's Battle of Antietam. Folks can try out some futuristic weaponry on those poor 19th century soldiers. Just make sure not to hit the glowing blue guys -- the future needs them. The game is currently in development by Iowa-based 8monkey Labs and will be released on September 8. If you're interested in more of the weaponry from DoD, be sure to check out the previously released weapons trailer. %Gallery-22012%

Iowa-based 8monkey Labs' Darkest of Days is slowly approaching its September 8 date with retail destiny. The latest video from publisher Phantom EFX shows some of the historical and future-tech weaponry that time jumpers will be using in the game.Darkest of Days has certainly been keeping a low quantum distortion profile. For those just hearing about it for the first time, the FPS is about a time traveler who needs to save particular soldiers for the sake of history. Some videos of that gameplay can be found on the official website. We're still mostly in the dark about the game to this day, but it sounds interesting.%Gallery-22012%

Trying to move beyond PC casino games, publisher Phantom EFX is ready to release the Darkest of Days on September 8 for PC and Xbox 360. The FPS follows a time traveler who must save certain soldiers in wars because "history needs them." You know, it's the anti-Terminator.The game is being developed by 8monkey Labs out of Cedar Falls, Iowa. That's not really important, but we so rarely get to write about devs from Iowa that it felt like it needed to be said. Some videos of the game can be found on the Darkest of Days website. Sadly, nobody says, "Come with me, if you want to live," in any of them.%Gallery-22012%

With less than a week until 2008 is officially history, our overclocking hombres at BigDownload have put together a preview of next year's PC lineup of action / first-person shooter titles. From the likely (F.E.A.R. 2, Mirror's Edge) to the not-so-likely (Duke Nukem Forever), the list highlights 20 or so games you can look forward to clicking through (in a good way) next year, including some exclusive screenshots from Darkest of Days, Wanted: Weapons of Fate and Wolfenstein. Care to take a guess on how many of these games won't make it to our New Year's Eve 2009 party?
