  • Amazon bears the best deal on Crystal Bearers

Amazon's awesome Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers offer has gotten even better. The online retailer is still taking pre-sales at $44.99, with an exclusive calendar, but it has now added a $10 credit on future game purchases to the package. So the game is effectively $34.99. With The Crystal Bearers coming out after Christmas, it seems poised to take advantage of gift money and/or returns of items gamers don't want. However, this pre-Christmas deal may require some budget-conscious gamers to spend against their presumed future cash gifts. Or, for those of you with enough disposable income, you can just buy it. After a controversial piece last week, followed by a stressful and virus-contracting holiday weekend, I decided to take things easy this week and go for an easy target. As you can assume, my expectations for this title aren't that high. In fact, I've really only one question: is this game worse than Deal or No Deal. As I popped the game into my DS, I notice something interesting. I asked for "Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader," but it looks like they sent me "Are You Smarter than a 10 Year Old," which is the British version of the American game show. I guess whoever was responsible for this is not smarter than a 5th grader ... (punches self). At least I won't have to deal with sub-par humor.

To learn all there is about something, you sometimes need to go to the extremes. For shovelware, we are about to boldly trek into the eye of the storm. Deal or No Deal has the lowest aggregate score according to Metacritic, narrowly edging out Homie Rollerz. But we need to give it a fair chance. We can't succumb to the self-fulfilling prophecy. And besides, as a poster hanging in my high school English teacher's classroom profoundly stated, "what is right is not always popular, and what is popular is not always right." Indeed, just because one nerd hates Castlevania 2 doesn't mean you should automatically define it as a bad game. Okay, I can't fluff this anymore: Deal or No Deal for the DS isn't as crappy as you expected. It's crappier.

The "self-help" era is upon us, even finding its way into the video game industry as of late. Aside from the obvious fitness awareness game on Nintendo's other system (we mean Wii Fit, of course), there have been quite a few attempts to help gamers improve their lifestyles and habits. Take, for example, the upcoming My Weight Loss Coach and Ubisoft's "Easyway" title to help people quit smoking. Our favorite approach so far, though, was when DS Fanboy reader Dan used Pokémon to quit smoking. If there's anything we've learned from Dan's inspiring story, it's that the best way to curb an addiction is to replace it with another. We then decided that we wanted to help more of our fine readers that are suffering from such torments day in and day out. Pokémon may cure smoking, but what about other plaguing ailments? We're happy to say that after months of testing on monkeys and small children, we've finally come up with a few perfect video game cures. So, look no further than Dr. DS Fanboy, and check out our ultimate self-help guide to find the fixes for your addictions. Master that addiction!

  • Nintendo and Toys "R" Us make a "Deal"

Toys "R" Us has a new promotional tie in with NBC's choose-it-or-lose-it game show Deal or No Deal. It seems there's a game piece offering the choice in recent store circulars. Choose "deal," get 10% any single item in store. Go for broke and choose "no deal," and you might have a chance at a Wii (second prize) or a DS Lite (fourth prize). The store is handing out 50,000 Nintendo systems as part of the promotion. That's a whole lotta systems right there. Of course, the grand prize is a million bucks, but does that really stand up to some sweet Ninty merchandise? Then again ... that could buy a whole lot of games. The catch with the super sweet "no deal" option is that you have to take the game piece into the store to get it scanned, and the winners won't be announced until November 24, so that's a bit of a wait if you're one of the lucky few. Still, if that's all it takes to pick up some free stuff, maybe that's a sign we need to go dig through the paper.Didn't get one of the ads? Never fear -- you can mail in a request for a gamepiece.
