If you're anything like us, you're spending today avoiding the family that only comes around once or twice a year and hanging out with the ol' Xbox 360 (preferably with air conditioning as well). And though we have tons of games from the unusually busy first half of this year to still play catch up with, who are we to turn down this week's Xbox Live Arcade deals? Out of the four titles -- Mega Man 10, Scrap Metal, Death By Cube, and After Burner Climax -- all but one are half off, and even that one (Scrap Metal) is dropped in price by a third. So what're you waiting for? It's not like you'd be silly enough to spend today actually outside. There's sun out there! Gross!

  • X3F TV -- XBLA in Brief: Vandal Hearts, Death By Cube

This week on XBLA in Brief, we take a brief look (geddit?) at Vandal Hearts: Flames of Judgment and Death By Cube. The two games are about as different as can be, with Vandal Hearts being a strategy RPG -- a rarity on XBLA -- and Death By Cube offering a frantic twin-stick shooter. Both games seem good at what they do, though Death By Cube may just have a little magic in its simple, hectic formula. Check out the latest XBLA in Brief episode above and see if either Vandal Hearts (1200 / $15) or Death By Cube (800 / $10) strike your fancy. Aside from being one of the best indie bands to emerge from Champaign, Illinois in recent years, Cubes and Vandals neatly compose this week's Xbox Live Arcade update. As previously announced and reiterated just now, Square Enix's Death by Cube and Konami's Vandal Hearts: Flames of Judgment join the Xbox 360's download service on Wednesday, January 20. After missing its original release target in 2009, Vandal Hearts brings the classic strategy franchise up to speed with enhanced visuals, an overhauled interface and a 1200 ($15) price tag. Those less enthused by moving squares on a grid might prefer mowing down cubes on a plane -- that's what you'll do in Death by Cube, available for 800 ($10). It's also what you'll do at a Cubes on a Plane concert. They're just terrible live.

  • Square Enix wants you to experience Death By Cube on XBLA Jan. 20

click for screen-filling gore In the wake contrails of 0 Day Attack on Earth's December 23 release, Square Enix has announced that its next XBLA title, Death By Cube -- also a twin-stick, multidirectional shooter -- will be the new kid on the Live Marketplace block when it arrives on January 20. Seeming to draw inspiration from arcade classics such as Robotron and Smash T.V., the Premium Agency developed title is easily the most gore-filled Square Enix release, er ... ever, pitting players against cube-shaped enemies (getting the title yet?) that just happen to explode into bloody messes when killed. We went hands-on with the game at Tokyo Game Show 2009 and were pleasantly surprised by its smattering of unique play mechanics on top of a fairly done-to-death formula. Of course, you'll be able to judge it for yourself by downloading the trial version. If you like it, you can simply commute the demo to a full Death sentence. %Gallery-70583%

click to enlarge It's possible that you'll be put off by Death by Cube when you notice the phrase "twin stick shooter" in its description; however, quick-to-judge players will miss out on one of the most creative titles in the genre's recent history. While Death by Cube doesn't revolutionize an overdone genre, Square Enix has provided one of the more memorable experiences I've had on XBLA since first playing Geometry Wars.%Gallery-70583%

  • Square Enix's 'Project Cube' becomes 'Death by Cube' for release

Square Enix's Robotron-ish shooter Project Cube has been bestowed its release name: Death By Cube. A European trademark noted by Siliconera a couple days ago had the site speculating that it was the final name, but Square Enix confirmed that to be the case today.Squenix doesn't currently have any public assets to go with the game, so the best we can do is show you the (admittedly less than ideal) video of Project Cube after the break.
