You know that unlocked iPhone T-Mobile has to sell in Germany? Right, the one that costs €999 instead of €399 with contract. Well, if you're Debitel, then you make a bid for the iPhone non-exclusive by offering a €600 sign-up bonus (to bring the cost back to €399) on a network of your very own. Of course, visual voice mail is a no-go and there's no mention of unlimited WiFi, but at least you've got the iPhone (and a fat Debitel contract, presumably).Update: Debitel's rates will start at €40 per month compared to T-Mobile's €49.

For a company that makes a business of putting together handset and plan packages on other carriers' networks, it only stands to reason that adding an iPhone package or three is probably healthy for the bottom line. Germany's Debitel says that it totally wants in on T-Mobile's unlocked iPhone action, provided that it proves "technically feasible." It's a little bitter that T-Mobile didn't consult with Debitel and others before announcing the staggeringly-priced €999 unlocked iPhone, but overall "welcomes" the move. Welcome it all you want, Debitel, but unless you can somehow package that thing into a more reasonably priced offering on other carriers, there may not be much of a business model here.[Thanks, Lance]

Productivity everywhere stands to suffer for the next month or so as World Cup Fever sets in, but expect German productivity to take an even stronger hit -- carrier Debitel is using the tournament as the launching pad for its new T-DMB service. No word on how many games will be available for viewing, but we suspect there'll be enough to justify stealing off to the office bathroom at an alarming frequency. The service launches today along with the compatible Samsung P900, which will set you back €199 (roughly $250) with contract.
