  • The Daily Grind: Does your MMO guild use social networking tools?

    by

The apparent popularity of ZergID, the most recent social network and online gathering spot for MMO players and guilds, made me wonder just how many gamers actively use these types of tools. I can remember them at least as far back as the early 2000s, when ezBoard was king (remember ezBoard?!). More modern versions, like Enjin, expanded on the message board format to include profiles and calendars and even DKP. But my guild has shied away from most such tools. We've always had a custom-built website with our own tools, some purchased software and some handcrafted just for us. I wouldn't want to risk losing data on another network, and truthfully, most of my guild's communication is done through other outlets anyway, like Steam, voice chat, and text-based chat channels. What about you folks? Do you use ZergID, Enjin, or other sites to organize or track your friends and guildmates online? Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind!

  • Enjin offers guild recruitment system

Guild hosting service Enjin has added a new tool to its ever-increasing arsenal: guild recruitment. The site's new global game recruitment system allows organized groups to post their "players wanted" ads for searching souls to discover. The recruitment list is sortable by category and includes an MMO-dedicated section. Using the system, guilds can post a lengthy introduction letter to convey its purpose and history, where it's located, how many games it's a part of, and what voice communication (if any) it uses. At the time of this writing, Guild Wars 2 has the most recruitment ads, followed by World of Warcraft and Star Wars: The Old Republic. [Source: Enjin press release]

Enjin has quickly established itself as a go-to place for players in need of a community site, and now, thanks to a partnership with Overwolf, the site has introduced the Enjin in-game client. The client works similarly to other in-game overlays such as Xfire and Steam, and it's integrated directly with players' Enjin sites, which allows them to use nifty features such as uploading screenshots and videos directly to their profiles. And hey, if you're part of Massively's awesome Enjin community, you can use the client to keep up with our community as well. The full list of the program's features, as well as a link to download the Enjin in-game client, can be found over at Enjin's official site, so head on over and give it a go. We'll see you folks there.

  • Captain's Log: The breakup

Captain's Log, Stardate 64903.4... Hello, computer (and players)! When most relationships come to an end, the dumpee can often feel a sense of abandonment. As Star Trek Online players, we are currently feeling something similar after the announcement that Atari is "parting" ways with Cryptic. As we noted last week, Atari announced during its May earnings report that Cryptic is a now "discontinued operation," which leaves us pondering what will become of the game we are so passionate about. In an attempt to counter the rumors flying on the internet, I spoke with Cryptic's PR team and can confirm that that there is no official press release yet and there are no comments that have been or can be made by Cryptic. So all the rumors out there about what is going on are currently just that... rumors. All we know right now is that Atari is planning on putting Cryptic Studios up for sale. With that said, and rumors aside, I would like to share some of my thoughts, explore the feelings of the playerbase, clear up some misconceptions, and explain why this could actually be the best thing to happen to STO. Ensign, warp 10! There is no looking back now...

We're very excited to unveil a brand-new feature here at Massively: our Massively site on Enjin! This is your central location for all the extras -- our chat room (which will replace the current IRC setup), events calendar, voice server information, and forum. We still love it when you comment directly on the news and columns via our comment system, but if you want a more in-depth discussion beyond that -- or to leave suggestions on various aspects of Massively -- our shiny new forums are the place for that. Even better, we're so excited about this new feature that we've arranged to share it with you! Enjin has a pile of cool features in its guild and clan hosting packages: Mumble voice servers; forums; event calendars; application and recruitment systems; personalized guild, clan, and gaming themes; multi-game support; and much more. Sound good? We hope so, because we have four one-year Enjin hosting packages to give away! One guild will win an ultimate package, and three others will each receive a premium package. To enter, send us an email telling us how you'd use a year of free guild hosting. Tell us a little about your guild, what premium and ultimate Enjin features you love, and which ones your guild will use the most. Include a screenshot of your guild and the subject line "Enjin contest," and you are entered! You have until next Wednesday, April 13th at 11:59 p.m. EDT to get your entry in. We'll announce the winning guilds on Thursday, April 14th, so read over our contest rules, get those entries in, and best of luck!

  • The Classifieds: The Open Ticket

The Classifieds brings you weekly news from around the WoW community, including our famous Random Acts of Uberness. When I receive an especially tasty tidbit or tip to tuck into The Classifieds, I usually nudge it quietly into my 15 Minutes of Fame or World of WarCrafts folder so that I can give it a little more breathing room and chat with the creative force behind whatever's going on. I could do that for the lead of this week's The Classifieds, too -- but I'm not going to. The folks behind TheOpenTicket.net have cast a mind-bogglingly huge net of humor and parody over an entire web site, twisting current world and WoW news into wry stories, cartoons and videos. Want more? Just explore the site -- it's all there. "TheOpenTicket.net ... (no ads, just fun) that has been writing fake news stories about Azeroth since WoW open beta," writes co-creator Caldwel. "The site is written, designed, and illustrated by myself and one other from the Shadowsong (US) guild <Redridge County College>. Up until this past January, our stories were just published solely on our guild site, but after prodding to write more stories, we decided to move it off to its own site. We do one story a week and try to tie in some timely world events. ... Our current story which mimics the iPhone4 fiasco and has the head of Gnomish Engineering handing out free rubber bumpers for the malfunctioning devices." Ready for something a little more (ahem) actual, factual about the WoW community? Let's crack open The Classifieds ...
