Look up there! In the sky! No, don't look directly at the sun, you fool! See there? At 3 o'clock? It's a bird... perhaps a plane... or maybe the return of lifetime subscriptions to Champions Online! It's been more than a year since Cryptic has offered the pay-once-play-forever deal, but now it's back. It may seem odd that the company is bringing back lifetime subs on the verge of a free-to-play launch, but Cryptic sees this as offering players a full array of services: a normal sub, a lifetime sub, or the F2P experience. Additionally, Cryptic is sweetening the deal by including a number of goodies, including a Foxbat pet, the full digital version of the game (so if you haven't done so already, you do not need to buy a copy of Champions to play it), costume pieces and access to the game's VIP lounge. For players who would rather pay once and then not have to worry about fees in the future, Cryptic is charging $299 for the lifetime sub. You can read more about it over at Champions Online.

  • The Digital Continuum: Applying Foxbat liberally to Champions Online

I thought about writing about a lot of different subjects this week. I knew that I wanted to discuss Champions Online, but I couldn't decide on a topic until I played a lowbie character and re-experienced the amazing Foxbat mission in the teen levels. Then it occurred to me, that what this game sorely needs, is an event of epic proportions centered around the maniacal -- yet lovable -- super villain.

If you needed proof that October 27th was just a couple weeks away (aside from a calendar, of course) then look no further than this massive update to the Blood Moon page on the official Champions Online website. The page is filled with event-exclusive perks, rewards, item drops, screens and even a snazzy Takofanes wallpaper. The zombie Foxbat toy in particular will be a wonderful way of making all your friends jealous, assuming you can get it to drop. Those new screens are actually pretty key here, because they reveal something about Blood Moon we didn't specifically know yet: the new costume pieces. Looking through the screens, we noticed player characters who're obviously using the new Celestial powers. However, some of them -- like the character above this post -- are sporting outfit pieces that we're wholly unfamiliar with from our time in the game. Now, it could be that we haven't come across these angelically inspired outfits yet, but something tells us this just isn't the case. We're sure to hear something more official in the next week or so, but you heard it here first!%Gallery-75357%

We've known for some time that Ice Slide was going to be a travel power, but now we've got our very first look at it with the most recent release of screenshots from Cryptic Studios for Champions Online. And what a screen it is, what with an ice-armored shark-man in a surf pose as he, well, surfs on ice!The image really makes you start to wonder what sorts of characters are going to be possible in just a short couple of months away when the game is finally released. There's also an image of the elusive Foxbat, and while we've been denied a look at his in-game face, those sneaky Cryptic developers have given us a really cool distortion effect to gawp over. Just imagine it now: a shark-man trained in deadly martial arts. It's enough to make you want to cry with joy, really.%Gallery-17946%

  • Bill Roper addresses community questions for Champions Online, himself

A special edition of Ask Cryptic for Champions Online is out now and it features Bill Roper answering all sorts of highly interesting questions. The most interesting answer from Bill concerns his involvement with the game, as it's now beyond concept and initial design stages. Apparently, Bill's past experience at Blizzard involved coming in during the polish and release phase of a game -- which is something he was never involved in at Flagship. That and the continued support for future content will be Bill's role at Cryptic with concern to Champions Online. Oh, he also expresses an interest in doing voice work for the infamously awesome Foxbat. Intriguing. The other thing we took away from this was that the game is getting pretty close to beta, which would mean that it's on track for an early 2009 release date. We must admit our shock at the possibility, as most MMOs suffer at least one delay during the development process. Could this one prove to be an exception to the rule? We certainly hope so.

  • Champions Online's Foxbat unveiled, now shake in fear!

When it comes to supervillains in Champions Online it doesn't get any better than Foxbat. We're especially fond of characters that break the fourth wall in a light-hearted manner, more-so when they're complete loons as well. If you're unconvinced of the amazing-ness of Foxbat then let us persuade you otherwise. He is a master of forty-seven different martial arts but instead prefers to shoot people with his patented Foxbatgadget the Amazing Ping-Pong Ball Gun. This "amazing" piece of technology is capable of shooting all types of ammo, which apparently range from irradiated plutonium to uh, vanilla custard? He also once attempted to steal the Empire State Building, although was unsuccessful due to logistical issues.Yeah, everything about this guy is comically-charged. His outfit, smile. gadgetry and all-around crazed-yet-dashing demeanor make us love him so much. Yet we know that when the time comes, we'll have to defeat (or try to defeat) Foxbat in combat, oh well.Designs like Justiciar, Mind Slayer and Foxbat are really helping to showcase the Champions Online character roster. We can only imagine what the coming months hold for us at this point.

During a recent media event at Cryptic Studios, Jack Emmert gave a presentation on what the Champions IP was all about, including the history of the Champions universe and its super-powered beings. He also took some time to answer a few questions, and delineated how the Champions Online MMO will distinguish itself from City of Heroes.Although the video misses a few minutes of the beginning of the presentation, it does cover the major figures such as Defender, Doctor Destroyer, and Foxbat (pictured above); the various organizations the world harbors; and the Nemesis system. There's a lot of great content in Emmert's words, and if you're like us, it all just makes you hungry for more. The full 14:50 video is all yours after the break!

  • Champions Online writer nominated for award

We knew this guy was awesome, so it's nice to see him in the running for an award. What award is John Layman -- writer for Cryptic Studio's upcoming Champions Online -- being nominated for, you ask? None other than the Harvey award for his work on Stephen Colbert's Tek Jansen No. 1 -- that's right, he's the series' co-author. The comic issue in question is being nominated for best single issue or story. It's also worth noting that the second issue is coming out on July 2nd, so if you weren't sure about getting it before you've got yourself a new excuse. This is a really great sign for anyone looking forward to Champions Online, since a lot of how interesting the game characters and Champions world will be relies on Layman's ability to write well. We really can't wait to see his take on Foxbat, which should prove to be especially awesome. We're looking forward to the mission where we get to stop Foxbat from flooding the city with Jell-O or forcing everyone to do the macarena repeatedly for hours on end -- or maybe he'll try to carry off the Empire State Building again.
