While Google's Project Loon moonshot project first broke cover, the pilot for its internet via high-flying helium balloon service launched in New Zealand, but a post by the team today is about research flights in the US. There's no mention of plans to try offering the service on domestic latitudes, but the tests are allowing Google to tweak its power systems, design and radios. The one specifically mentioned involves stratospheric flights over Fresno, investigating the effect of the city's radio interference on Project Loon's transmissions. We're not sure how much closer this puts us to popping up an antenna outside to get our broadband connection bounced from a balloon flying at about 60,000 feet, but more pics and details are available at the link below.

We're hesitant to say that the flood gates are open, but it looks like AT&T is pushing its Total Home DVR software out at a pretty regular clip. Just days after introducing it in the Bay Area and merely hours after dumping it on Dallas / Fort Worth residents, AT&T is now bringing the U-verse update to customers in Los Angeles, Fresno and St. Louis. In short, the software refresh enables users to play back any recorded SD or HD program on any connected TV in their home at no extra charge. Who's up for placing bets on the next locale to get the good news?

Sure didn't take AT&T long to move west from Nevada, as it has just announced that residents in and around Fresno, Visalia and Clovis, California now have a shot at signing up for its fiber-based services. U-verse TV, broadband internet and phone has been flipped on in the Central Valley, and while select individuals can order the goods now, AT&T has vowed to string it out to more communities in the near future. As usual, AT&T's not mentioning whether 2 SD / 2 HD will be activated immediately, but here's to hoping it is.Update: Looks like 2 SD / 2HD is active. Thanks, Dragonwyntir!

That's it.  Just Fresno. Although I'm sure our HD Beat Fresno readership is glad to hear it, previous DirecTV releases have been a bit meatier on the number of added local areas. Still, KFSN/ABC and KGPE/CBS are live today and we're sure many are glad for it. Per the usual, you'll need the new dish and receiver combo to get these MPEG-4 broadcasts.Fresno, today is your day in the sun.
