This Saturday, FX Game Exchange, a video game retailer in Plano, Texas, will be hosting a charity gaming event to benefit cancer-stricken high school student Alex McGuinness, though the event itself is not your typical pledge drive. "The 1up Gameathon for Alex is just like a 5k race - except instead of running, participants will be playing video games for ten straight hours on Saturday, February 8th, 2014," says the official website. "Everyone involved will be actively raising money through pledges from various donors. For example, one person may pledge $1 per hour played, or a simple one-time donation." As for where the money's going, there's good news and bad news. The good news is that Mr. McGuinness is doing quite well. "Through the excellent treatment of doctors and the miracle of modern medicine, Alex is on the road to recovery and has maintained an amazing and inspiring attitude throughout his treatment." The bad news is that here in the United States, healthcare for cancer patients is very expensive. This event hopes to alleviate some of the debt incurred by McGuinness during his recovery. If you'd like to learn more about this charity gaming marathon, full details can be found at the 1up for Alex website or by following the event's Twitter account. Live in the Dallas Fort Worth area? What's the weather like there? We only ask because it's the stomping grounds of id Software and we're hoping to check out a demo for Rage there next week. Oh, you hadn't heard? It's totally going to be at the FX Game Exchange in Plano on May 7. We were tipped off via this Facebook event, which promises "food, drinks, giveaways, and much much more." The first live Rage demo is said to kick off at noon, though the shop will be opening its doors at 10AM local time. If you need us, we're going to pack our belongings into a polka dot bandana and neatly tie it around a stick before donning our best vagabond get-up. If you know of any vacant box cars we can hitch a ride on, be a peach and let us know? Thanks!
