G4 just announced the final vestiges of its video game content, Attack of the Show! and X-Play, will cease production by the end of 2012."Both shows will include original episodes through the end of the year, and will look back at their most memorable moments as we lead up to their final episodes," G4 noted in a statement.Attack of the Show debuted March 28, 2005. X-Play had been on the air since April 28, 2003, back when the network was called TechTV. G4 had recently seen the departure of long time hosts Kevin Pereira from Attack of the Show and Adam Sessler from X-Play.That's it for gaming content on G4, making Geoff Keighley's GameTrailers TV on Spike the only prominent video game related show left on American air... er, cable.Update: Joystiq has been informed by a source close to the matter that G4TV.com's gaming editorial staff at "The Feed" is being laid off, with their final week taking place before Thanksgiving. We currently don't have an official count on how many jobs have been lost. At least five editors have been laid off and a skeleton crew may remain on staff past the pre-Thanksgiving layoffs.A representative for G4 had "no comment" regarding further layoffs. Asked if the network had intentions of continuing with what we described as any gaming content, we were referred to the attached press release, which avoids the subject.

Hmmm, what is this a casting call for:CASTING START: 4/2/2009 12:00:00 AM CASTING END: 4/7/2009 11:59:59 PM CASTING LOCATION: Los Angeles, CA GENDER REQUIREMENTS: Female Only AGE REQUIREMENTS: 18 and up ONLY OPEN TO MEMBERS IN: California No, perv. How could you even think that? It's actually G4's cattle call for a new "G4 TV Female Correspondent." Although this post could go down a really dark path, let's desperately attempt to take the high road. Here's an idea, G4: Why not get a female game journo that gamers and the game press actually respect -- call us, we know a few. Heck, we respect commenters like Saria the Cat more than some of the double-x chromosomes we've seen on G4's airwaves.Oh, wait ... G4 wants someone "self-deprecating ... attractive and relatable to G4's audience." We already feel bad for the girl that gets this job.[Via Destructoid]

  • G4 moving to HD in December?

It was inevitable, really. G4 clearly targets the young male, and young males clearly prefer their TV to be aired in high-def. After a recent falloff in viewership during Q3 of this year, G4 President Neil Tiles is looking to make moves to get those numbers back up. In fact, he outrightly stated that "as of December, we'll be moving towards an HD offering that will allow us to bridge that gap." Unfortunately, no more details beyond that were given, but suffice it to say, we'll be pretty dismayed if December comes and goes without nary a mention of G4HD. Look, if Spike can go HD, you guys can to. Game on![Thanks, longhairbilly]Update: Seems G4HD is expected by Comcast on December 8th. Thanks, Jeremy!

Microsoft recently announced that G4 TV has added a part of their television lineup to the U.S. Video Marketplace, of which two shows are already available for purchase. G4's animated series Code Monkeys, snowboarding reality show The Block and daily tech news show Attack of the Show (sorry, no X-Play) are all up for purchase for 160 Microsoft points each. Though, for whatever reason, Attack of the Show is currently missing in action. Also, as an introductory promotion, G4 is offering up Code Monkeys' "Dave's Got Boobs" episode for free, so grab the 242MB episode if you're interested.[Thanks, StLouisRibs7734]

The recently-ragged G4TV is getting ready for its annual awards show and it has just opened its website for voting. According to the official line, the awards show, set to air August 8th at 6 p.m. EST, will be less sensational: This year will be very different than past years - no big BS Hollywood party or non-gaming celebrities reading poorly written jokes off teleprompters - more lo-fi, by the people for the people... you get the picture. Spike TV clearly has the lame, made for mainstream, disingenuous MTV-like award show covered, we're happy to let them have it. According to Robert Juster, executive producer of G4 Interactive, the show will use the theme of an "election night coverage special -- with a very Colbert Report / Daily Show feel to it." Juster then provided this video as an example of the "awesome 'attack' ads" produced by the G-Phoria team.

  • 21 hours with G4: the final ragging

The Game Rag could not wait any longer, so it posted the rest of its feature chronicling 21 hours watching G4TV. As the day progressed, and a new episode of Attack of the Show shone through crappy re--runs like a dimmed light, author Michael Piercey lamented at the cold truth: even if G4TV got the right formula for gamers, would we even watch? Many of us yearn for a return to the days of TechTV, for various reasons (Leo LaPorte being one of the most frequently cited, but we also loved Eye Drops). Back then, GameSpot TV / Extended Play (the ancestors of X-Play) still got flak for being out-of-touch with gamers. We are a disparate lot, whose tastes have only be satiated by the multitude of outlets available on the internet. We are not defending G4TV; we just wonder if it is even possible to make a successful gaming channel. It would need a few improvements and additions:
