Good news for any Xbox Live members that have ever wanted a dead user's name: Microsoft has "begun the process of making previously used and unavailable (dead) Xbox Live Gamertags available," according to Major Nelson. Previously, any lapsed Gamertags -- caused by changing a Gamertag or closing an account -- went to the infamous Xbox Live "graveyard," never to be used again. Now Microsoft is reanimating the "zombie" tags and offering them up for use once again. Major Nelson notes that the process "will take some time to complete," as more trashed tags are converted for reuse daily. He advises users to "check back regularly" to see if a desired tag has been resurrected. Xbox Live memebrs can change their tags in the profile section of the Xbox Dashboard (pictured). The cost of changing one's Gamertag, regardless of whether it's a revived tag or a brand new one, is 800 points ($10).

Xbox.com's lovable french fry connoisseur TriXie recently got around to tallying up the numbers and publishing the Top 25 Gamertags of 2007 which is viewable after the jump. And it should be no surprise to see names like Major Nelson, e and trixie360 leading the list. But if you go a little further down you'll notice that, sandwiched between casinoguy and DeaconBlade360, is our once very own Knuckles Dawson at the 19th spot. Congrats to David for making the list as we continue to wonder how a gamertag by the name of CerealKiller5 beat us out. Oh well, our super popular day will come eventually when our gamertag will be plastered on billboards, print and the internets the world over! One day, oh yes ... one day. [Thanks, Jon Rojas]

Microsoft's Trixie (Christa Phillips) released a list of the top 25 Xbox Live gamertags in 2007 over the weekend. The list is compiled "anytime the gamercard or profile is called up," with more "hits" resulting in a higher placement. Topping the list is obviously none other than Major Nelson, known in real life as the vowel-deficient Larry Hryb, Xbox Live's director of programming, the guru and go-to man for Xbox related issues and announcements -- especially when things go horribly wrong with the service. We're not exactly sure who a lot of the people on the list are (which can also be found after the break with an appropriate video clip), but Ms. Trixie comes in at number three behind other Microsoft personality Eric "e" Neustadter. Xbox Live "cheater" Gilbert Arenas bounced in at number six, while Call of Duty 4 and Halo 3 developers made eight and nine respectively. Also, former X3F writer David "Knuckles Dawson" Dreger made number 19. Now, let's see if you all can fill in the rest of the names behind the gamertags.
