.nounderline a { text-decoration: none; } Money can buy you a lot of things, but it can't buy you patience. You can't really put a price on the ability to abandon that must-have, do-want and day-one impulse -- and if you could, it would probably cost quite a bit more than what you hope to save by simply taking a deep breath and waiting for the hottest game to cool down. If this holiday season has granted you a brand new console with an old and bloated backlog, you might find a good selection in 2008's best games, particularly in Joystiq's top ten favorites. Read on to find the industry's former best, now with a year's worth of price erosion. Mirror's Edge | Dead Space | Far Cry 2 | LittleBigPlanet | Gears of War 2 Braid | Fallout 3 | Left 4 Dead | Metal Gear Solid 4 | Fable II

They say that the Japanese are known for their impeccable respect of timeliness. So why is it that leading Japanese mag Famitsu is revealing its 2008 Game of the Year winners now? Here are some highlights: Person of the Year -- Hideo KojimaThis is a man that not only has time to pen the complex and convoluted script behind Metal Gear Solid 4, but will star in weird videos meant solely for fanboys. That's a man you can respect. Rookie Title Prize -- The Last RemnantPerhaps "rookie" is a good word to use for Square Enix's RPG that almost played at a respectable framerate on a system that almost sold well in Japan. Innovation Prize -- Wii MusicThis game innovated by being the first Nintendo-developed Wii game that didn't sell billions of copies. Game of the Year & Best Seller Prize -- Monster Hunter Portable 2nd GWe love it when "best selling" means simply "the best." In America, the best game of 2008 is Wii Play. While we at Joystiq like to be fashionably on time with our Game of the Year picks, our network of sites has already named some winners, and in case you've missed them: PS3 Fanboy Awards, now with one PSP category! More importantly, though, we've learned the staff is very good at making PSP and PS3 predictions. The Nintendo Fanboys couldn't play favorites, so they just chose their ten favorites for both Wii and DS and decided to put them in no certain order. The crew at X3F couldn't come to a consensus, either, so they did individual picks (Richard, Xav, Dustin) in addition to letting the readers choose for themselves. On the PC side of things, here's BigDownload and Massively's picks for the best of ought-eight. ... Oh, you want to see our GOTYs? Sorry, but you'll have to wait until tomorrow.

While gamers probably won't be flocking to Time for its list of the top 10 games of 2008, there's little doubt that the list will wind up under the scrutiny of plenty of non-gamers. The list is part of the "Top 10 of Everything of 2008' feature, which includes lots of top 10s, including things like the top 10 scientific discoveries (LHC FTW!). So what made the number one spot on Time's list? None other than Grand Theft Auto IV. Taking the second spot is the excellent XBLA platformer Braid, followed by Little Big Planet at number three. Heavy hitters like Gears of War 2, Spore and Dead Space also make the list. Alongside them are some stranger picks including a Flash game, an iPhone game and Star Wars: The Force Unleashed.Check out the list for yourself and give us your feedback on the list. We're just guessing, but we're betting there are some games in your top ten that aren't on the list.
