GridNetworks & Global Media Services merger to bring GridCast TV to the big time, hopefully
HD streaming mavens GridNetworks have merged with Global Media Services to create what they term as the "first comprehensive streaming and media services platform." We know GridNetworks is all about peer-to-peer GridCasting delivery tech that would let many view lag-free high definition streams over the Internet, and it seems that GMS is all about putting on live streaming events, so this should let them keep doing that, but in even higher quality. The first media company/brand/event to take advantage of this pairing? We're still waiting to hear that.
GridNetworks launches GridCast TV service to bring internet video to TV sets
If the term GridNetworks seems vaguely familiar, it's because it is. After being invested in by Cisco back in March, the outfit is finally pushing out a quasi-tangible product in the form of GridCast TV. You see, the service actually relies on other boxes to handle the dirty work, meaning that content owners have complete control over how their material is distributed and via what channels. By leveraging UPnP technology, content owners can beam out programming to anyone with an internet-connected PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and HDTV (for example), and we're told that online video mainstays Revision3, IndieFlix and havocTV have already begun using it. Good luck out there -- with a space this crowded, you're bound to need it.
Comcast sinks money in P2P video-delivery startup -- imagine that
After being accused of slowing traffic on peer-to-peer applications and eventually fessing up at least somewhat to controlling throughput, Comcast has went and sunk some cash into a P2P video-delivery startup. Seattle-based GridNetworks announced this week that the mega-corp would make "an unspecified investment in the company and collaborate on developing so-called peer-to-peer file-sharing techniques that are friendly to internet service providers." Outside of that, what the deal means for either party has yet to be fully revealed, but regardless of future plans, one can't help but chuckle at the glaring irony of the whole ordeal.
Cisco invests in internet HD delivery startup GridNetworks
Figuring out a way to get HDTV through " a series of tubes" is becoming an increasingly interesting -- and crowded -- venture. GridNetworks has revealed Cisco is one of the companies behind a recent $9.5 million dollar investment in the company that's focused on providing a delivery system for TV and film content in HD to PCs or TVs over the internet. What's so special about this group's GridCasting technology? We don't know yet, but with ties to a giant like Cisco we'll probably see applications sooner rather than later.[Via TVWeek]
