And the Guitar Hero games keep on coming! The latest, Guitar Hero: Smash Hits, culls the cream that has risen to the top of each Guitar Hero game and injects them into one über Guitar Hero. Instead of throwing all of the tracks out there for one and all to see, Activision held open voting to see which of the previous games' included tracks would be revealed first (gee, thanks!). The winner was the original Guitar Hero.Head past the break for the first list of tracks, along with some links to YouTube videos for your sampling pleasure.%Gallery-46942%

  • Guitar Hero: Greatest Hits' smashing new title

Activision must have been under tremendous pressure to develop an empirical method of determining the greatest songs in the Guitar Hero series for Guitar Hero: Greatest Hits. It would be difficult to pick the determining factors: fan votes? Number of notes? Length? Sales as DLC? Sales of the original record? Some kind of measure of volunteers' brain activity while playing? It's a big question. And what if songs came out after the release of the collection that were even greater than the Greatest Hits? Then the title would be a lie!Activision's solution: change the title to Guitar Hero: Smash Hits. That's safe from potential inaccuracy, because it doesn't really mean anything! That "The best of Guitar Hero music" line at the bottom kind of ruins our theory about the name change. Ignore that part.%Gallery-46942%[Via GoNintendo]

It's time to check in with our old friend, recycled Guitar Hero content! Yesterday, we learned some details about Guitar Hero: Greatest Hits, including a few of the songs being reanimated for full-band play. Today, Activision released the first screenshots of the game. Surprise! It looks just like Guitar Hero: World Tour. Not that we expected a severe visual overhaul out of a game that isn't even providing a musical overhaul. While it'll be nice to revisit stuff from the first Guitar Hero with new note charts and new instruments, we can't help but feel that GH:GH is the least exciting guaranteed multi-million-seller of 2009.%Gallery-46942%

IGN has an interview with Paul Gadbois, producer on Guitar Hero: Greatest Hits, the franchise-milking upcoming compilation of what Activision has determined are the most popular songs from every console GH title to date. Canadian development studio and port-expert, Beenox, is putting together the disc, which hits 360, PS3, PS2 and Wii in June. (It's confirmed at $60 for the 360/PS3 release, $40 on Wii and $30 on PS2.)According to Gadbois, this mash-up of previous Guitar Hero games will offer full band play on all 48 of its included (master) tracks, while also including the music studio, character creation, and online features introduced in Guitar Hero World Tour. Eight tracks-from-the-past have been revealed so far: "Barracuda" by Heart "I Love Rock N Roll" by Joan Jett and The Blackhearts "I Wanna Rock" by Twisted Sister "Killer Queen" by Queen "Killing in the Name" by Rage Against The Machine "Nothin' But A Good Time" by Poison "Them Bones" by Alice in Chains "Through the Fire and Flames" by Dragonforce What was it The Smiths once sang? "Re-issue! Re-package! Re-package!"

During today's Activision Blizzard conference call, Activision Publishing CEO Mike Griffith boasted of a "robust lineup" of three new Guitar Hero titles dropping before the midpoint of the year: Guitar Hero: Metallica in Q1 as well as "a new Guitar Hero game for the Nintendo DS" and "a separate greatest hits compilation Guitar Hero game" in calendar Q2, (through June). In case that's not clear, the Guitar Hero Greatest Hits pack (or GH2 as we're likely to think of it) will include "full-band versions of some of the most popular songs from previous Guitar Hero games and will be made available for the 360, PS3 and Wii."Something tells us that despite some healthy competition from the likes of Rock Band, with products like this "greatest hits compilation" on the way, we're not going to be ripping our Guitar Hero tracks anytime soon.
