A keen observer over at DBSTalk noticed that the ATSC tuner add on for the HR21 is finally available on DirecTV.com for purchase. This $50 accessory will enable HR21 owners to tune into and record OTA HD channels and is a must have for anyone who wants access to every local HD channel in their area. Although DirecTV caries HD locals in most markets, it doesn't carry all the HD channels in those same markets. As expected, it'll let you record two shows at once, but unfortunately it doesn't work with the H21 HD receiver (non-DVR).

Back in the day, the idea of buying an HD satellite receiver without an integrated ATSC tuner was unheard of, but with all the markets with HD locals these days, it's hard to argue that everyone needs an OTA tuner. DirecTV -- like all companies -- is alway looking for ways to save money, so on the latest lineup of receivers, ATSC was left out. To help out those customers who still have the need for an OTA tuner, DirecTV is going to release a $69 companion tuner for the HR21 (regular and pro). This little dual tuner box connects via USB and piggy backs off the main unit's power via a daisy chain method to help try to cut back on cables. There's no word on availability yet, and while we're sure someone is excited about this, we're holding holding out for the HDPC-20. Another pic' of the lovely couple after the break.

Our relationship with technology is no doubt a love-hate affair, so it's no surprise that every time a new HD device hits the street we get excited at the possibility that whatever bug was driving us nuts with the current version is resolved. The DirecTV brand HD DVR definitely applies to this one, and while some people don't have any problems with the H20, others can't wait to try out the H21. So if you fit into this group, it might be time to hit up your local Best Buy and see if you can find an H21-200 on the shelf, and be sure to let us know if it's any different from the H20 before it.**Update** sorry, I mixed up the numbers, I edited the post.

If you're quickly growing frustrated with the excess heat that tends to build up within your H20, the folks over at DBSTalk have managed to score a first look at its replacement, the H21-200. This HD receiver (read: no DVR capabilities) is essentially an upgraded H20 that sports a currently unused Ethernet port (shown after the jump), adds a coaxial digital audio output, reportedly responds "much quicker" to the remote than the HR20, and best of all, seems to "run much cooler" than the unit it will inevitably replace. Of course, we don't envision too many of you clamoring to get your palms around a device that doesn't record, but if you're interested in DirecTV's upcoming answer for your secondary (or tertiary) set, hit the read link and dig in.
