Look, we know this 3D thing is as likely to sink as it is to swim right now, but we have to hand it to Samsung -- it's pursuing the idea with some pretty hefty ambition. A 55-inch 1080p panel with a true 240Hz refresh rate is a decent base on which to build your paradigm-shifting new offering. Using a set of "shutter" glasses, which rapidly alternate between blocking out the left and right eye, the set is capable of delivering the full 240Hz quality, debatable as its benefits may be. Of course, the value or otherwise of a TV like this is going to be found only by experiencing its output in person, so if you're somewhere near Seoul this week, head on down to the IMID 2009 conference to get an eyeful of an early model.

Samsung and LG are locked in a tight race for "best HDTV you won't be buying this year or next" this week at the International Meeting on Information Display 2008, trading shots with OLEDs, LCDs and more. Samsung brought along an upgraded version of its true 240Hz 15-inch Blue Phase LCD panel with improved image quality, some fresh carbon nanotube-based color electronic paper, plus slimmed-down versions of its 40- and 50-inch LCDs. Then it got busy with the OLEDs, dropping in a 14-inch HD display, 31-inch 1080p display and 5-inch VGA panel, to which LG could only respond with the above 19-inch OLED powered by amorphous silicon TFT. More stills of the carnage exist beyond the read link, but in the battle of display tech streeting in 2011 at the earliest, we just hope LG is holding back a few surprises for CES.[Via OLED-Display, thanks Erik]

  • Samsung gets really into AMOLED

Ever the forerunner in anything that might get them a "World's _____" designation on one of their products, Samsung was showing of a couple of AMOLED display-equipped devices at IMID 2006, going down in Daegu, Korea right now. The newish display technology combines two champs of display tech: active matrix, and organic light emitting diodes, which seems adept at providing great color rendering uniformity while also bumping up brightness and the display's contrast ratio. Where the viewing angle starts to degrade (30 degrees) sounds a little harsh to us, but a portable with a 2000:1 contrast ratio, 520cd/m² brightness, 16 million color gamut, and 0.01ms pixel reponse time isn't anything to sneeze at. Unfortunately the device vehicles for their new 4.3-inch and 2.4-inch diagonal displays are probably unlikely to find themselves in consumer hands any time soon, but if nothing else they serve as a head turning introduction to the new display tech.
