Engagieren! At this year's E3, German game developer Keen Games (under the production of Gameforge) brought us to warp speed and gave us a first look at the upcoming browser-based MMO Star Trek: Infinite Space. Powered by the Unity 3D engine, the latest game in the Trek franchise will be free-to-play by the end of 2011. The devs are calling it an "action-tactic" MMO, and it title will hopefully give players just what they have been asking for in a Trek MMO. Set in the Deep Space Nine timeline, the game allows players to create custom characters and immediately begin to pilot their own ships. Right from the beginning, a player can start as either a Starfleet or a Klingon officer. To our surprise, the game's development is being fully supervised by Mike and Denise Okuda, Star Trek experts who have been involved in the franchise's many movies and television shows. Star Trek: Infinite Space is currently in closed beta but has a cinematic trailer that is sure to give any Trekker or Trekkie goosebumps. Check it out after the break! Massively's on the ground in Los Angeles during the week of June 6-9, bringing you all the best news from E3 2011. Whether you're dying to know more about Star Wars: The Old Republic, RIFT, or any MMO in between, you can bet we'll have it covered! %Gallery-125755%

  • Snap Judgment: Infinite Space

When we review a game without finishing it, we call it a Snap Judgment. Read why here. Time played: 3 hours Portable games are often expected to be light, short-session experiences that you can jump into at any time, understand immediately, and play for minutes at a time. Infinite Space is not that at all. It is a deeply complex RPG with several interacting systems, all wrapped in a not-too-friendly interface. In fact, it's pretty much as baroque as you would expect a game about leading fleets of spaceships of your own design to be. %Gallery-22958%

  • Infinite Space tutorial demonstrates how to skip parts of Infinite Space

There's a lot to learn about playing Infinite Space, as evidenced by the fact that Sega has made a second tutorial video for the Platinum Games space RPG. This video teaches one of the most important techniques in the game: skipping battle scenes. Every action in a ship battle is accompanied by a long sequence in which crew members call out what they're doing and prepare whatever kind of action is to be deployed. It's dramatic, and it lends the game a very "spaceship anime" feel -- but it also takes a long time. So, yeah, you can skip that after the first couple of times. The tutorial also covers crew battles and, strangely, recalibrating your touch screen.

Did you pick up Infinite Space yet? The DS spaceventure was released from its docking station by Platinum Games yesterday, and so far the reviews are actually better than we expected. We've got two more launch trailers to share with you: one above which seems to be the intro to the game (complete with Star Wars-style crawl and the weird narration we've come to expect from this game); and another after the break which will walk you through the game's battle tutorial. If you've tried the game out, let us know what you think below. The battle system seems different and the story isn't supposed to be too bad, either. You wouldn't think that an infinite void of open space would have that much going on, but maybe it's worth a shot.

Ready to leave your boring home planet and take off on a grand, spacefaring adventure in your very own spaceship? Like, with a crew and everything? Sega has issued the North American release date for Platinum Games and Nude Maker's Infinite Space for DS. You'll be able to build onto your spaceship, engage in space battles and do other space things on March 16. There's a new trailer above -- not as far above as space, just at the top of this post. For some reason, every game from Platinum has been released in the first quarter of the year -- MadWorld in March 2009, Bayonetta in January 2010, and now Infinite Space in March. Will Vanquish debut in Q1 2011?

Infinite Space, the upcoming DS space RPG from Platinum Games, has gotten itself a European release date in the form of March 26th (or as you might call it in Bangladesh, "Independence Day"). Strangely, we still haven't heard an official US date yet -- the closest we've got is Spring 2010, which despite all of the snow you might be seeing lately, is approaching quite quickly. Assuming that the EU and US dates aren't too far off from each other, by the end of March you too might be saying, "I'm... in space!" just like the wince-worthy voice acting we've experienced so far.

The latest trailer for Platinum Games's latest, Infinite Space, features some brief clips of the shipbuilding and space combat elements of the RPG's gameplay. It also features voice acting. Yes, those are human voices speaking lines of dialogue from the game. We don't want to make any judgments about the quality of the voice acting, but we can confirm that it is, in fact, voice acting. On an unrelated topic, we'd like to talk about the Nintendo DS's volume slider (and the DSi's rocker switch). Isn't it great how the volume can go all the way down? Why, with the volume minimized, you could enjoy all kinds of interesting games, even if there's some kind of audio issue!

  • Infinite Space anime prelude part two: Pirates riding dinosaurs

Wow. We figured the line, "Praying, we drift in coffins afloat at sea. It is a good day to die!" that kicks off this second Production I.G. / Gonzo-animated prelude to Platinum Games' space-faring action-RPG, Infinite Space, would pretty much be its high point but oh were we ever wrong. In the span of this two-minute short, you've got a heap of space combat (seemingly directed by someone playing a keyboard) and space pirates, including one who's perched atop a space dinosaur. It's easily one of the weirdest things you'll watch today. We'd say the weirdest thing, but the internet's surprising that way.

When Sega released the first episode of its Production I.G/Gonzo-animated Infinite Space video series in Japan, we were quite pleased to look at it, but our rudimentary understanding of the language prevented us from gleaning anything substantive from the story. Luckily, Sega has started translating the videos into English, with voice acting and everything, and we can now enjoy both looking at them and knowing what's going on. The voice acting is pretty much what you'd expect from American anime releases, but it's a small price to pay for comprehension. In this trailer, we see that a crash-landed "Watcher" gives protagonist Yuri the opportunity to build his own spaceship. This trailer comes along with Sega's announcement of a spring 2010 release date in North America. We can only hope it continues releasing translated videos to tide us over.%Gallery-22958%

  • Infinite Space takes space at top of Japanese charts

Platinum Games' first release may not have been a sales phenomenon, but the company has found (relative) success with its second, the DS sci-fi roleplaying game Mugen Kouro (Infinite Space). It was a slow week for Japanese software sales, which allowed Infinite Space's 38,394 copies to put it at the top of the Media Create sales chart for last week, its first week in stores. The three spots below that on the chart also belong to DS games: last week's top seller, Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days sits at #2, followed by Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth and Sloane and Machale's Mysterious Story. The #5 position is held by Dynasty Warriors 6 Empires on PS3.%Gallery-22958%[Via GamesIndustry.biz]

This is the perfect week for Platinum Games and Sega to show off the first ship-to-ship battle footage from Infinite Space, visible after the post break. The Star Trek reboot movie comes out this week, and this game might as well be the JRPG take on Trek. The bottom screen shows the view from the captain's chair, and the top screen is basically a feed of your ship's viewscreen, providing a look at the enemy ship facing you down. A few other quick battle clips are available in the "Star Ship" section of the official site. The game comes out next month in Japan, so we expect to start having more footage show up on screen soon!%Gallery-22958%[Via Siliconera]

Platinum Games' second project (the first to be released in Japan) is about as different from MadWorld as any game could be: it's Infinite Space, the epic sci-fi RPG for DS. Sega just announced that it'll be released in Japan on June 11. No international release dates have been announced yet, though GameStop suggests July 7. Infinite Space casts the player as a spaceship crew member who works his way up to captain, and features giant, customizable spaceships and wireless ship-to-ship battles.Along with the announcement, Sega refreshed the Japanese website for the RPG with some animated story scenes, and released new screenshots. Hopefully as we approach release, we'll be able to see more gameplay stuff.[Via Siliconera]

  • Platinum Games launches community site

Billed as a "grand experiment," Japanese developer Platinum Games just opened an English-language website for gamers outside of the land that birthed Chocobos. Rather than creating a corporate site de rigeur, Platinum's taking a more community-based approach, including forums (MadWorld will be teh awesome everyone!), social media interaction (Hideki Kamiya just ate a sandwich!) and even a video podcast. "It is part corporate homepage, part purpose built community portal," reads the site's front page. And between that fancy new logo and this community-based initiative, we'll remain hopeful going forward. After all, this isn't the first time a Japanese developer has tried to do this, right? What's the worst that could happen?

The above video is the best animated short made to advertise a video game you will see today (absolutely definitely), and maybe the best ever, even if this sort of marketing becomes commonplace. If it does? We all win, especially if the videos are half as good as this one, made by Production I.G. and Gonzo.Below? The best screenshots you'll see from a game advertised in this way. Basically, we're just offering you the best of the best here. That's easy when you're talking about Infinite Space, and considering the pedigree, probably easy to say about anything Platinum Games decides to do, ever. %Gallery-22973%
