From old-fashioned slow cookers to newfangled sous vide machines, there seems to be a never ending array of appliances aimed to take the guesswork out of cooking. But they're often limited in functionality -- you can't really deep fry something in a sous vide machine, for example -- and they take up valuable storage space. The Meld, which launches on Kickstarter today, aims to change that. It's a cooking solution that aims to bring precise cooking controls to a multi-purpose appliance you already have -- your stove.

How to solve the problem of controls cluttering up electronics devices? Simple: make the device the controller. That's the simple but elegant solution employed by designer Hironao Tsuboi with the equally simply named Vol Speaker concept. The speaker is the knob -- or maybe the knob is the speaker. However you choose to unravel this zen-like chicken and egg riddle, the result is pretty neat. [Thanks, Arthur]

Got more curiosity than energy to open doors? Then you'll want to get yourself one of these fisheyed globe doorknobs from designer Hideyuki Nakayama. The idea is resoundingly simple, the globe on your end of the door provides a wide-angle view of what's on the other side, which is achieved by collecting and reflecting light soaked up by another globe on the other end. So yes, privacy might be a tiny bit compromised with these door handles, but the fun coefficient should be through the roof.

Sure, using your fingertips to control gameplay was novel at first, but we scarcely-satisfied geeks are always looking for more elaborate control schemes to wrap our sweaty palms around. For DS owners who just so happen to adore Arkanoid, that fantasy will soon be coming true, as the Arkanoid DS title will reportedly play nice with "a special controller resembling the arcade controller (complete with the knob)," and will be available in silver, white, black, and pink. As if you couldn't have guessed, both the game and the oh-so-enthralling controller have only been confirmed for a Japanese release, but here's to hoping we Americans get our chance too, even if it's a few months later.[Via Joystiq]

It's not like we really need another version of Arkanoid. The classic Breakout clone has already shown up on over a dozen classic computer systems, as well as the NES and SNES. But the new version recently revealed for the Nintendo DS has an important leg up over the competition -- a special controller that mimics the original arcade game's rotating knob. The first portable version of the game (not counting unofficial homebrews), Arkanoid DS will include an attachable knob controller that plugs into the DS' Game Boy Advance slot, according to a 1up translation of a Famitsu story. The game will also have 140 stages and a quest mode focused on completing specific tasks, according to the story. The game is slated for a December release in Japan, and while a North American release hasn't yet been announced, the bevy of arcade classics already on the system makes it seem likely.
