Last year, I had planned to change up the focus of Storyboard a little. The "high and wide" format had been working, but I was worried that the column just wouldn't have legs if I didn't start going for more focused and narrow applications. So I spent several months working on just the right way to do more game-specific columns in here. You don't remember them, of course, because none of them was ever posted. Those several months of work did not produce a single viable column. At the capstone of the second year of Storyboard, I'm forced to basically eat crow about one of my major plans for the last year because it turns out that not only did it not work but it didn't need to work in the first place. I managed to fill up another year of columns just fine without going into great detail about one game over another, and as it turns out, I'm a lot happier with this year as a whole anyway.

A year ago on January 27th, viewers of the site were treated to a header image in which Mr. Swift poked hopelessly at a keyboard. This was the header for the first installment (or "issue" if you want to be thematic) of A Mild-Mannered Reporter, covering all things City of Heroes. And for those of you who are just now glancing at your calendar, yes, that was just about a year ago. Those of you who remembered my sign-off for the last column (the one that mentioned this would be an anniversary column) are in slightly better shape. These things happen once a year, and I figured one day early is better than six days late. And it's been quite a year for the game and the column alike, with plenty to talk about every Wednesday. So let's take a trip down memory lane and look back at a year of the column with another year just around the corner. If you're just coming into the column now, or if you want to look back at some old favorites, now's the time.

The question of our own mortality is one of the defining conundrums of our existence. How do we sum up our lives? In our final moments in this mortal shell, what are the important thoughts and feelings that will play back in our head? In this beautiful video, Bonkey attempts to answer some of that. The title is simply Looking Back. As a man lies dying on his bed, we spend three minutes seeing through his eyes. Some of the scenes are joyful and comforting, while others are a little more haunting. This is one of my favorite machinima pieces in a while. The narrative is not complex or overwhelming, but the final theme is strong and moving. Truly, my hat's off to Bonkey for Looking Back. Interested in the wide world of machinima? We have new movies every weekday here on WoW Moviewatch! Have suggestions for machinima we ought to feature? Toss us an email at machinima@wow.com.

In honor of the EQversary giveaway, we dug up some thoroughly ancient footage of Everquest. Tetra2012 posted a video almost two years ago that is supposedly from November of 1997! Every day, we post a machinima with qualities such as special effects, high-end graphics, or a killer storyline. This video is grainy and not very detailed. However, it's a piece of history.Sony Online Entertainment has invited players to make their own piece of history for EQ's 9th. Machinimators have until April 3rd to capture the magic of a game that's stood the test of time. Were you around for the alpha or beta of Everquest?
