TUAW Guide: Xbox 360 and Mac
In many of the recent reviews of the Apple TV, the Xbox 360 was often mentioned as a competing Media Extender product. Having recently bought a 360, I thought it would be good to discover the ways in which my two pretty white boxes can work together. In this TUAW Guide to Xbox 360 and the Mac, I'm going to discuss some of both the hardware and software compatibilities between the machines. If you've ever been curious about the Xbox 360 read on, and if you're an old hand my Gamertag is matonmacs, send a friend request my way; maybe we can get a TUAW clan going!
Mac OS 10.4 gets answer to Windows Live friends list
Mac users sometime get the shaft from Microsoft. Messenger is neutered, for one thing, especially on the Xbox Live front. So, James Howard decided to do something about it, and wrote MacLive, giving users with Mac OS 10.4 a cool little app to view their friends list with. It even has Growl alerts, allowing you to track specific friends or games' activity. Here, we can see Dustin Burg doing what he does ... well, not exactly "best", but maybe "most". Geometry Wars #1 player K4rn4ge hitting up Root Beer Tapper, having recently completed it. And finally we have community member and fellow podcaster TheMan661 hitting up Lost Planet's multiplayer.* So, all in all, the app works pretty good, and Howard says that after today's attention, he'll be sprucing up the features in the coming days, and we'll keep you posted. MacLive: Your Xbox Live Friends on the Mac
MacLive is an Open Source utility to keep track of your Xbox Live friends on your Mac. You can set it to let you know when your friends log on via a Growl notification (so you can get fragging as soon as a buddy shows up online). Unfortunately, according this review MacLive is still a little rough around the edges, as the add a friend feature is apparently broken and there isn't yet a way to send messages, manage the friends list, etc.Nonetheless, this is a great idea, particularly if the developer James Howard continues to improve it. MacLive registration opens
MacLive is a 3-day conference and workshop for Mac-toting creative professionals everywhere. The more than sixty workshops focus on Photoshop, Motion & DVD Studio Pro, Final Cut Pro, Mac OS X, the iPod, After Effects and a lot more. This is the very first MacLive conference, and it's put on by the folks at Layers Magazine (which is the successor to Mac Design Magazine). Registration is $699US, but you can save yourself $100 if you sign up before April 17th. The event will take place at the Jacob Javits Center in NYC on May 11-13, 2006. Sounds like a great time.
