A new "Bonus Edition" of Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed brings in the most sensible Sega franchise ever for a racing game: OutRun. A level based on Sega's classic racer will be included with the edition, sold to pre-order customers at launch (in other words, it's a bonus for the first printing, more than it is a "special" edition.)Alongside the OutRun content, the Bonus Edition includes a playable Metal Sonic character and vehicle, and an in-game "Emoticon Sticker Pack." As part of the announcement of this edition, Sega also announced release dates for the PS3, Xbox, and Vita versions: November 20 in North America. The 3DS and PC versions weren't given specific dates, but they're presumably still due in November.

If you own Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1, you'll be able to unlock extra content in Episode 2. Owners of both get free access to "Episode Metal," which adds four new levels and a playable Metal Sonic character. This functionality recalls the "Lock-On" technology in Sonic & Knuckles, which allowed Sega Genesis owners to connect previous Sonic games to the cartridge and replay them as Knuckles the Echidna. The difference now, of course, is that there's no cartridge to connect.

On Thursday, the UK PS3 version of Sonic and Sega All-Stars Racing received a new downloadable racer and a new stage: Metal Sonic and the Egg Hangar, respectively. Then, in what seems like an inadvertent April Fools prank, it disappeared, having evidently been released early as a mistake. The Sega blog post announcing the actual DLC release for this week (Shenmue's Ryo Hazuki in his forklift) makes a point of noting that "This is the only DLC item out today." For a few lucky, Sonic-fast buyers, it was some early DLC. But for the rest of us, it's the source of some footage, captured by reader Hogfather, that we can watch after the break to preview some upcoming DLC.

We hinted at the presence of a secret character in Sonic Rivals when we played the game at DigitalLife. Well, it looks like the secret's out (thanks to screenshots posted on Gamespot), and Sonic fans are going to love the news. Metal Sonic, the evil robotic clone of Sonic will be the final unlockable character, and you'll be able to play as him once you beat the game. For hardcore Sonic fans, this should be incentive enough to pick up the game when it comes out in November.
