Did you know that you can download handheld games now? That's amazingly convenient! The only inconvenient part of it is finding the right games to buy -- and that's where we come in, with our Portabliss column. Three times a week, our new Portabliss column will tell you about a downloadable game on the iPhone, iPad, Android device, DSi, 3DS, PSP, etc. Today: Mighty Flip Champs DX! We didn't have a periodic column about portable downloadable games when WayForward unleashed the bookish puzzle game Mighty Flip Champs upon DSiWare. WayForward graciously ported the game to PSP and released it as a Mini last week, affording us the opportunity to treat it as a new release once again and write about it here. Thanks, WayForward!

We heard the first inklings of a PSP version of WayForward's DSiWare game Mighty Flip Champs earlier this year. Now, WayForward has officially announced Mighty Flip Champs DX as a PlayStation Mini, and released the first screen demonstrating just how such a dual-screen-dependent game will transition to the PSP and PS3. In short, the two "screens" are now side-by-side on the single screen. The room you're currently in displays on the left, with the next room on the right; at any time protagonist Alta can "flip" to the next room, trying not to be crushed by the new surroundings. Mighty Flip Champs DX will be released on the PlayStation Store July 12. In the announcement after the break, designer Matt Bozon encourages new players not to "miss out on this top shelf experience. Even if it sounds weird."

  • ESRB: Mighty Flip Champs coming to PSP in 'DX' form

One of DSiWare's better-received games is moving to a new home. WayForward's Mighty Flip Champs, which is about navigating maze-like rooms by flipping between two of them at a time, is heading to PSP in a version called Mighty Flip Champs DX, according to a rating found on the ESRB. Without an official announcement, there are still a lot of questions to answer about this version of the puzzle platformer -- like when it's coming out, and, um, how a game about flipping between two screens is going to work on a system known for its singular screen. We'll ask the mighty WayForward.

WayForward is rewarding its true fans who buy both Mighty Flip Champs and the upcoming Shantae: Risky's Revenge, with an unspecified bonus in the latter. If you have Mighty Flip Champs installed on your DSi, you'll find something special in the "import room" in Shantae's Scuttle Town. The exact identity of the bonus will depend on your progress in Flip Champs, but, as WayForward's email announcement notes, "Whether you bought it, beat it, or rank among the best, a bonus awaits every MFC player." If you don't want to feel left out, you can still buy Mighty Flip Champs now and work on it until Shantae's October 4 release. For that matter, there's nothing stopping you from working on Mighty Flip Champs after Shantae's release.

Voldi Way, president of WayForward -- or "Tyrannical Overlord" of the company, if his business card is to be believed -- gave us one of the company's first interviews as a "publisher," having recently self-published downloadable games on DS (Mighty Flip Champs) and WiiWare (LIT). During this E3 interview, Way told us that the company has at least three new unannounced projects, two of which are coming this year on Wii, and one also headed for PC. He also addressed the purported Aliens vs. Predator DS game and discussed the company's licensed game strategy, about which we may have accidentally given him a complex.

Even though we're beginning our hellish descent into the mouth of madness that is E3, Nintendo is still taking the time to unload the downloadable goods to fans. This week, you'll find some fresh DSiWare, and your usual doses of WiiWare and Virtual Console goodies to boot. So, head past the break to check out what's available this week on Nintendo platforms.

WayForward -- creator of the upcoming A Boy and His Blob -- has announced that its new puzzle game, Mighty Flip Champs, will release for DSiWare this week. The game has players guiding the main character, Alta, through a series of mazes, which can be flipped like pages from one screen to the other. We still haven't seen the game in action, but given WayForward's pedigree, we're hoping for good things. Mighty Flip Champs will be available June 1 for 800 points.

As mentioned in the announcement of Squibs Arcade, Nintendo of Europe is holding a WiiWare (and DSiWare) media summit this week. During the event, Nintendo released a list of WiiWare and DSiWare games planned for release between April and June. On WiiWare, the biggest news is Cave Story! Even though we knew it was scheduled for release in April or May, seeing more confirmation of that (for more regions) is great! Swords & Soldiers is also on the way. In addition, there are also a few games we haven't heard much (or anything) about. Each game has a brief description in Nintendo's announcement. Bonsai Barber Cave Story ColorZ Crystal Defenders R1 Icarian: Kindred Spirits LIT Overturn: Mecha Wars Robocalypse: Beaver Defense Spaceball: Revolution Squibs Arcade Swords & Soldiers Water Warfare In DSiWare, the most exciting title (to us) is Nintendo's Art Style: PiCOPiCT, a retro-Nintendo-themed puzzler with reinterpreted NES music by YMCK. • WayForward's new IP is DSiWare's Mighty Flip Champs

WayForward's new IP, teased last week in its newsletter, has been revealed: a DSiWare game called Mighty Flip Champs! Matt Bozon, director of Shantae and Contra 4, is in charge of the new puzzle game, which faintly evokes Away: Shuffle Dungeon. In Mighty Flip Champs, protagonist Alta navigates a series of mazes that flip from one to another like pages. Alta must position herself in one room such that she'll be in a safe position in the next (shown on the bottom screen). She then uses her Magical Warp Wand (which we are guessing represents the stylus) to trigger the flip.WayForward has yet to release the details of Mighty Flip Champs, like the pricing or date. Of course, Nintendo has yet to discuss the price structure for North American DSiWare games, so that will have to happen first.
