Sometimes, you'd like to know that there are other MMOs out there, right? It's not all WoW, all the time! Our sister site Massively can provide you with everything you need to know about all of the other MMOs around -- past, present and future. Blizzard to attend PAX East Blizzard Entertainment sort of does its own thing these days. The company has the clout to ignore most gatherings outside of the obvious BlizzCon when you consider the sheer size of World of Warcraft and other properties. But it looks as if this year things will be just a little bit different. Blizzard has stated that representatives will be attending this year's PAX East to show something off. And to compound the bafflement, it's not what you'd expect. Massively's comprehensive preview of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn Final Fantasy XIV is doing something that has never been done before. After launching to poor reception, the MMO appointed a new producer and director, Naoki Yoshida, who has been working tirelessly for two years to rebuild the game from the ground up. The launch version shut its servers down in November of last year, and since then players have been eagerly awaiting the release of the game's revitalized relaunch, Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. Celebrate RIFT's second anniversary with the Carnival of the Ascended What's a party without a dragon piñata or two? Luckily, RIFT fans won't have to find out as the annual Carnival of the Ascended will have those and plenty more for revelers joining in the game's second anniversary celebration. But the carnival -- with its games of skill, pie-stomping contests, and special anniversary cape -- is not the only goody in today's 2.2 update. Besides the previously revealed features, PvP gets a tier 2 attunement of war. Want to see what awaits in the update? Watch the trailer! SOE lawyering up in its fight against PlanetSide 2 cheaters SOE president John Smedley took to Reddit yesterday to elaborate on the firm's banning policy as it relates to PlanetSide 2. Smedley also says that the cat-and-mouse routine is here to stay. "The fight against cheaters is not a war we will ever be finished with," he said, before explaining that the reason it takes longer to ban cheaters than some honest players might like is because the devs "don't want to falsely accuse people without solid proof." Sometimes, you'd like to know that there are other MMOs out there, right? It's not all WoW, all the time! Our sister site Massively can provide you with everything you need to know about all of the other MMOs around -- past, present and future. Elder Scrolls Online releases cinematic, begins beta signups A new press release from Bethesda and Zenimax trumpets the announcement (though "timing and details of the start of playtests will be provided at a later date"), and the firms have also released a slick new cinematic trailer that will whet your appetite for Tamriel over the course of its whopping six-minute run time. Fox News discusses Star Wars: The Old Republic's "gay planet" Star Wars: The Old Republic's upcoming expansion, Rise of the Cartel, will feature the first implementation of same-gender romances in the game. However, these romances will be limited (segregated?) to characters on the planet Makeb, and aren't truly relationships -- only flirtations with the local NPCs. Makeb has been dubbed "gay planet." Guild Wars 2 sells 3 million copies, looks to the future ArenaNet Game Director Colin Johanson took to the company's blog to talk about their game plan for 2013. Johanson kicked things off by dropping the fact that Guild Wars 2 has now surpassed three million copies sold. New events, polishing PvP, and giving guilds some love are all on the agenda for ArenaNet. Diablo III's Jay Wilson steps down as game director It's hard to imagine working on the same game for seven years, but for Diablo III's Jay Wilson, that was his reality. The game director won't be making it eight, however, as Wilson is stepping down to move to another position in Blizzard. Wilson stressed that the ongoing development of Diablo III will "carry forward as normal" and that he'll remain available to the team for consultation and advice. Turbine brings back Asheron's Call 2 Though Asheron's Call is still running, Asheron's Call 2, which launched in 2002, closed its doors in 2005. EVE Online breaks the 450k subscriber mark Between the recent launch of the Retribution expansion and a relaunch in China, EVE Online has accumulated more than 450,000 subscribers. EVE developer CCP partnered up with TianCity to bring the sandbox back into the Chinese market. According to a CCP press release, the game's business in China has surpassed expectations. Did SWTOR make things worse by going F2P? Star Wars: The Old Republic has caught a lot of heat over its approach to F2P gaming. With severely restricted gameplay for free players and exorbitant prices in its cash shop, The Old Republic may have done more harm than good for its game -- a surprise misstep in a market that has seen great success with F2P games in the past. Blizzard's Pardo: Single-player games are an endangered species Blizzard big cheese Rob Pardo recently revealed his doubts about the future of single-player games in a wide-ranging interview with GamesIndustry.biz. The interview delves into the pervasive social connectivity inherent in many current-gen games, and it also touches on everything from cloud gaming to monetization and business models. Pardo says he's a fan of game designers dictating the monetization models rather than leaving it up to a producer or an executive. Ten things to do in City of Heroes before it's gone NCsoft is pulling the plug on City of Heroes come the end of November, and the genre is faced with the loss of yet another pioneering and ostensibly profitable MMO long before its time. Before the game is gone forever, it's worth experiencing the MMO that many have loved since before the launch of World of Warcraft. League of Legends cheating controversy puts $2,000,000 on the line The competitive e-sports scene has exploded in the past two years, with top MOBA teams competing for prizes of up to an incredible $1,000,000 US from a single tournament. The crowd attending last week's event in Los Angeles got front row seats to see the game's best teams battle it out over a total of $2,000,000 US in prize money, and with so much money on the line, it's no surprise that accusations of cheating have already surfaced. Funcom hints at Halloween tricks and treats in The Secret World In a blog post prefaced with a spoiler alert, Senior Designer Tanya Short delved into The Secret World's upcoming Halloween event that was initially mentioned when The Cat God went live. Players already know that Halloween plays prominently in the game, as holiday decorations abound throughout Solomon Island, and Ragnar Tornquist himself likened it to Christmas in terms of holiday importance for TSW. Massively's Best of 2011 Awards 2011 was an interesting year for MMOs.
