Work Warning: There's some allusions and innuendo in this video. Welcome to another exciting round of Staff Picks in Moviewatch. This week, we'll be reviewing Hard Like Heroic by Nyhm, a particular favorite of Daniel Whitcomb. Why Hard Like Heroic? Nhym's still one of my favorite WoW machinimists of all time, repping the BC era warlock gear and spinning really funny parodies. As someone who played a Warlock pretty heavily in the BC era and still keeps her in skulls and spikes, I appreciate that. I also like his honest singing voice, better than it was on the I PuG KZ (another great video), but still... authentic for lack of a better word. The video's also full of fun imagery, a bridge by Summergale (Troll Shaman supremacy), and after the video, you get a bonus dig at Illegal Danish. I can't believe this video is 6 years old. It feels like yesterday I was humming it while cruising around Outland. It's hilarious how much of the humor is still good. Interested in the wide world of machinima? • WoW Moviewatch: If Women Ruled WoW 2

Work Warning: Cursing, mature themes, and more. Be forewarned. There's sexism and racism, intended in a critical way. The first If Women Ruled WoW was mostly played for laughs. And while there are plenty of jokes in this sequel, the overall tone is much different. It feels a little more thoughtful to me. In the end, I couldn't quite decide where I landed on it, which I suppose is part of the point. It certainly has some star power, featuring Gigi, Lil Biz, Quixotica, Ray, and Nyhm. Lots of gender issues line the streets of Azeroth's community. Sometimes we do a good job of things, avoiding a lot of the misogyny and hatred that stocks up other gaming cultures. Other times, we don't do such a bang-up job. This video flips male/female and then trots out virtually every crass stereotype and lame trope we see about women in gaming. I don't know if the video serves as a successful critique or wince-worthy parody. Normally, with the cursing, I wouldn't feature the video (we're a family blog, you see), but I truly feel the video's heart was in the right place. What do you think? • WoW Moviewatch: Pretty Fly (For a Draenei)

In reviewing classic, favorite machinima, Joe Perez stepped up and proposed Pretty Fly (For a Draenei). I don't know what it is about the draenei, but they absolutely seem to inspire the very best music videos. Of course, in a lot of ways, Nyhm invented the WoW parody music video, so it's appropriate that he sang for the entrance of everyone's favorite space goats. I'm not sure this video was the best showcase for Nyhm's vocals, but the originality and energy in the theme more than made up for it. Nyhm was always able to hit the sweet spot between "having fun" and "poking fun," and Pretty Fly (For a Draenei) is a good example. The lyrics aren't actually pro-draenei, if you listen to them carefully, but there's still a certain fun and affection happening here. Interested in the wide world of machinima? • Wow Moviewatch: The Molten Chorus

The Molten Chorus is actually a very old video created by Nyhm. Back when the video was contemporary, Nyhm was wondering what the old vanilla, level 60 raid bosses were up to now that everyone was storming level 70 raids like Karazhan. As a result, he created this short, nostalgic treat. As I've been leveling again through the Cataclysm content, I got to thinking about these same old raid bosses. There was a time when they felt bigger than life. I wonder, now that Deathwing has wreaked havoc on Azeroth, what they must think about things. The Molten Chorus seemed like an appropriate reminder of days gone by. Interested in the wide world of machinima? We have new movies every weekday here on WoW Moviewatch! • WoW machinima music video takes on R.E.M.

We don't know about you, but seeing WoW machinima in this clip instead of R.E.M.'s lead singer Michael Stipe is totally fine. And the song -- a rendition of "It's the End of the World" by Nyhm & Sharm -- could be more gracefully sung, sure, but it's really the heart coming through that counts.

Nyhm originally released Nerf You in December 2009. This video is a proud continuation of his work through the years. However, I feel like Nyhm's really nailed down a particular dynamic in the lifestyle of playing WoW. Getting nerfed sucks, there's no doubt about it. But for every person who feels like the nerf hammer hit them especially hard, there's probably a few who realize that it was probably for a good reason. I especially think Nyhm's vocal skills are on display in this video. It not only has a pretty catchy tune, but he really gets to show off his ability to use verse and intonation to bring it up to another level. The video is pretty fun also, and I'm thankful for the pseudo-subtitles for helping to keep me up with the lyrics. Interested in the wide world of machinima?
