It might not be locked in, but even skill-based games generally have you start with something like a class, and class-based systems are certainly the majority. And there's a reason why several players, upon seeing the information about the Guild Wars 2 Guardian class, immediately knew that it was the class for them. There's no similar class in Guild Wars for players to have experienced and enjoyed, but the archetype of a magical warrior is well-entrenched in certain people's minds. You don't need to know the details to know that heavy armor and magic is what you want. You might play a fortification-specialized Engineer in Star Trek Online, a Death Knight in World of Warcraft, and a Ninja in Final Fantasy XI, but at the end of the day you're playing offensively tilted tank classes in all three games. So what sort of class types do you tend to play? Have they always been conscious decisions, or have you realized after the fact that you keep playing similar types in each game? Or are you a true chameleon, changing with each game without any set pattern? Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming.
