The Metroid Mod is an impressive recreation of Nintendo's NES classic within punishing roguelike, Spelunky. The mod isn't out yet, but that can't stop you from watching Samus Aran explore Zebes-inspired caverns and avoid giant Metroids, speedy Skrees and even Ridley.

Nintendo's collaboration with Tecmo's Team Ninja didn't end with last year's Metroid: Other M. A new trailer for 3DS fighter Dead or Alive Dimensions reveals a dangerous arena encircled by lava and stalked by Ridley, the winged nemesis of Samus Aran. He's not one for mild-mannered spectating, instead spitting fire and taking an unfortunate combatant for an undignified tour around the ring. The trailer also shows that Samus has been authorized to drop a power bomb in the middle of the stage. It's flashy, and detonated without the preface of trashy fighting words -- umm, not that any DOA fighter could handle the deadpan delivery of her Other Monologues. See the video after the break, along with a trailer that shows off more gameplay and many of the game's slightly more realistic environments. You'll probably recognize a few from Dead or Alive 3 and Dead or Alive 4.

  • Dojo update: Hang out at Ridley's place

Another day on the dojo and another stage is unveiled. The seventeenth in all. This time it's Norfair, the place called "home" by chief Space Pirate Ridley (already confirmed as a playable character, you may recall, but with the Ice Climbers returning, who knows if this is still the case) from the Metroid games.Once again, there's almost a game within a game here, with fights periodically interrupted by gushing tidal waves of lava that can come from any direction. These wash over the entire level, with only a single safe spot (complete with hatches that close at the sign of danger) remaining untouched. Problem is, there's not exactly a lot of room on your anti-lava platform, so you'll have to scrap it out for a space. A bit like musical chairs then, only with the added risk of getting horrifically burned alive in molten hot goo. We like!%Gallery-6869%

  • Metroid Prime 3 'details' from Play Magazine [update 1]

Play Magazine has evidently revealed some "details" about Metroid Prime 3: Corruption in their latest issue. And, by "details" we mostly mean "opinions." But those are worth hearing, too, right? Otherwise, nobody would read game blogs. Check out the link for the impressions; we've picked out some actual details to highlight here. There's stuff here to make Super Metroid fans' ears perk up: beam combinations and familiar creatures. Play also offers a single tidbit about controls: you switch visors by holding the minus button and moving the Wiimote in a particular direction. The more actual gameplay impressions we hear about this game, the more we believe it may actually come out. Or that it's a really great hoax.[Warning: spoilers can be found at the link.]

  • Smash Bros. Brawl: who's in, who's out

Masashiro Sakurai recently let slip some information about who would not be making the cut come time for Brawl's release, along with who some of the newer cast members are outside of the previously mentioned. We here at The Fanboy don't agree with cutting anyone out of the game, so when we heard that Young Link, Ice Climbers, and Mr. Game & Watch would be getting the boot, we were a little more than upset. The inclusion of three new characters in Young Bowser, Ridley (YES!), and Wind Waker Link are nice, however we just don't understand why anyone has to be cut at all. I think I'm most upset that I won't get to scream 'sauuuuusages' at people in the tone of the famous Kids in the Hall sketch when playing Mr. Game & Watch anymore.[Via Codename Revolution; Thanks BPM and RageOverdose!]
