A Twitter joke gave rise to a truly original soccer game

The internet has a fantastic ability to embrace a joke, and then beat it to death faster than you can mumble "my name's Jeff." From Hobo With a Shotgun and Kung Fury through to Goat Simulator and Snakes on a Plane, what works as a 60-second gag rarely has staying power.

For kids growing up in the early 90s, the Commodore Amiga was the pinnacle of gaming hardware. It was no doubt helped by classic titles like Sensible Soccer and Cannon Fodder, which were the brainchild of Sensible Software founder Jon Hare. It's been eight years since the last Sensible Soccer game hit the Xbox 360, but with Codemasters still holding on to the licence, Hare's decided it's about time for a reboot: Sociable Soccer.

IPTV set-top box manufacturer Amino made a first recently, when it showed a live demo of G-Cluster streaming games played in high definition via its AmiNET130 STB. The G-Cluster service has been around in Japan for a while, it runs all the processing on a server, while the audio and video streams back to the user, but this is the first time its shown the technology used in HD. Resident Evil 4 and Sensible Soccer aren't quite as detailed as Call of Duty or Gears of War, but with enough bandwidth, it might not be long before we don't have to buy a disc or download a game at all.

Fans of, well, Soccer, will be pleased as punch to learn that the remake of 1994's Sensible World of Soccer will finally be making its way to Xbox Live Arcade sometime this month. At least, it will if everything goes well, according to developer Codemasters.Codemasters producer Jim Brown tells Eurogamer that the classic Soccer/Football title still has another round of submissions internally, as well as Microsoft's own certification process, but that the team anticipates the game's availability on XBLA within the month. According to Brown, delays on the game's release have been due to the multiplayer network code, which has been reworked significantly for stability. Sensible World of Soccer was deemed one of the ten most important games of all time back in March, by a panel including our very own Chris Grant.

  • Codemasters hopes for Sensible Soccer this month

Sensible World of Soccer has been on something of a release date roller coaster this year. Originally scheduled to release this summer, the game was set for August 29th. After this date was missed, the game was delayed for an indeterminate amount of time, though Codemasters warned it would not arrive in September either. Now November is upon us and Codemasters is shooting for a release late this month according to Eurogamer. That, however, is dependent on whether or not the game makes it through Microsoft's certification process on time. Given the history of this process, it's still quite possible that we won't be playing any Sensible World of Soccer this month either. Still, keep the faith fanboys, you may yet get your chance to play some classic football on XBLA this month.

Back in July, developer Codemasters confirmed that their XBLA game Sensible World of Soccer would release on August 29th with excitement and parades through the streets to follow. And even though we temporarily forgot about the game and its release, we double checked the Marketplace and lo and behold there is no soccer fun to be found. Sounds like the dreaded delay syndrome has struck again. So, we decided to do a little research and found out via Codemasters' community admin Rubbergenius that indeed the game has been delayed for unspoken reasons and that no firm release is in site. According to the community admin's post, they have taken down the tentative "Summer 2007" Sensible World of Soccer release date and replaced it with a uber vague "TBD" release. Rubbergenius promises that the game shouldn't be delayed for "months and months", but made sure to shoot down the late September release rumors that have been floating around. Oh so evil game delays, don't you see how much you hurt us?

Nostalgic soccer gamers will be excited to know that the official Sensible World of Soccer website has gone live dishing out some fresh media and promising a Summer 2007 XBLA release. The website features generic information about the game, a few screen grabs, and four adorable wallpapers. It also offers a video that gives a brief look at the gameplay and a link to the game's official MySpace group (oh so hip). And if that doesn't stimulate your inner soccer fanboy maybe the news of an Unofficial Official Sensible Soccer Live Arcade World Cup tournament that'll be taking place when the game releases will. Sensible Soccer achievements have just rolled in, detailing what exactly one would need to achieve August 29th to earn their 200 Gamerscore points. The achievements aren't anything uber exciting, although the artwork is pretty nifty in all its 8-bit glory including our favorites "Possession" and "Champs". What can we say, we enjoy zombies and cheerleaders even if they are a tad blocky. Achievements detailed in a Codemaster provided graphic after the jump with actual Gamerscore points still pending.[Thanks, Shawn]

Yesterday, developer Codemasters confirmed with Pro-G that upcoming XBLA game Sensible Soccer will be releasing on August 29th, which is just a few weeks after the soccer FA Premiership season kicks off. Marketing genius! Not only did Codemasters confirm the release date, but they also mentioned that the Sensible World of Soccer 96-97 remake will cost 800 Microsoft points. Now only if we could learn to cut our grass into those beautiful diamond shapes.

North Americans don't get soccer. Europeans don't get American football (and are understandably confused as to why it's called football). Still, both sports have their classic iterations. America has Tecmo Bowl, and Europe has Sensible Soccer. It was revealed some time ago that Sensible Soccer would be making its way to Xbox Live Arcade, and IGN has unearthed a few details about the game. Like many classic Arcade releases, Sensible Soccer will feature enhanced graphics and sound. Codemasters, developer of the series, notes that they intend to maintain the classic feel of the game, and all work will be based on the source code developed for Sensible World of Soccer 96/97. Finally, the game is scheduled to release this summer for both Live Arcade and Windows. Are any of our European readers excited about this?
