343 Industries plans to release "a number of server updates" today for Halo: The Master Chief Collection, with the aim of improving the problematic matchmaking. In an official forum post, Exec. Producer Dan Ayoub said the updates are due to roll out this morning (PT), and since they're server-side players won't encounter title updates or things like that. Ayoub added the studio aims to address other "community priorities" with another update this weekend, noting that one issue is causing certain achievements to not unlock. He also apologized to players on behalf of 343 for the issues encountered since launch, re-iterating the studio's efforts to fix things ASAP.

DC Universe Online has been quiet on the announced megaservers for quite some time, but it turns out that the update is just around the corner. Specifically, the new server structure will be going into effect on Monday, and players have been given a brand-new developer diary on the benefits and the procedure to help get everyone up to speed. In short, it's more people on servers and more people to group up with, albeit still segregated between PC and PS3 players. Character names will have to be changed in some cases, but the system being used ensures that characters whose names are changed will also receive a free subsequent change if they want. According to comments, the determination will essentially be comparing hours played -- so if you have two characters with the same name on active accounts, but one's been active since launch, the older character will get to keep the name. While it's not quite the cross-platform servers many players had hoped for, it should help bolster the population of each game server as a whole.

  • Additional instances can now be launched

Crygil has the official word: Blizzard has completed their updates to the servers, and they are now saying performance is much better: all realms have "shown an improvement in instance performance as well as a noticeable reduction in the amount of players hitting the instance limit." Note that they don't say the issues have been solved (no one would say that everything was fixed, because it never is), but there should be a marked improvements in the "additional instances" bug. In the immortal words of the great Douglas Adams, "We have normality. I repeat, we have normality. Anything you still can't cope with is therefore your own problem."And we're sure lots of players will welcome this news. At least until Cataclysm, when the flood of rerollers and werewolf fanatics taking on all of the new content and areas in the old world brings the servers back to their knees once again. But until then, enjoy your runs. Thanks, FerrioClef!
