It might look a little squat at first glance, but slide her open and the SGH-i620 is ready for business. We had some tactile problems with the touch-sensitive buttons up top, but the scroll wheel is like butter. Like most keyboards, we need some more time with it to give it a fair rating, but at first touch it's certainly passable. The screen seems awkwardly tiny compared to most recent smartphones, but it's certainly sharp and bright. In all the phone is a pleasure to hold and quite small enough to pocket, but we're not quite sure how much we could get done with it -- other than the usual photo snapping that Samsung phones are known for. %Gallery-6642%

Though we think we prefer it in white, Samsung's follow-on to the i600 and its variants -- the compact SGH-i620 slider -- is now official. Taking the wraps off at Berlin's IFA show this week, Samsung is calling attention to the unit's small size (just 95 x 59 x 16mm closed), jog dial navigation, HSDPA, and inclusion of Windows Mobile 6 out of the box. No word on a stateside release, but like its immediate predecessor, Samsung would have to craft a new version with the right bands anyhow since this one's rocking out with triband GSM and UMTS 2100. Expect a release in Germany, presumably on Vodafone, in September.[Via the::unwired]

  • Samsung's SGH-i620 set to hit Vodafone UK's shelves

There it is friends, the Samsung SGH-i620 in glorious black and white, posing for us as it gets primmed and propered for its launch on Vodafone UK. This nifty Windows Mobile 6 Standard slider has been covered in the past, but we now know that is sports a 2 megapixel cam and we hope an improvement on the i600's d-pad. Still no word on GSM frequencies, or -- the rumored -- HSDPA support, but we assume its launch in the United Kingdom precludes its arrival over here any time soon. No other solid details yet, but as soon as Vodafone updates its "Coming Soon" pages, we'll do the same here. In the interim, here's hoping we hear word of an SGH-i627.

  • Samsung i620, the i600's successor?

Thin, yes, but you won't hear many folks call Samsung's SGH-i600 (the BlackJack in these parts) a beautiful phone. With Windows Mobile 5 Smartphone and HSDPA, it's very functional -- but the praise stops there. It looks like Samsung's poised to change that all-work-and-no-play image with the i600's alleged successor, though. Pictured above is a phone said to be the SGH-i620, a slider sporting just a 94 x 59mm outline when closed. Despite the tiny dimensions, the i620 maintains its smartphone status and actually one-ups the i600 by coming preinstalled with Windows Mobile 6 Standard. Other specs are up in the air -- Samsung hasn't officially announced this one yet -- but it seems that GSM 850 is nowhere to be found, so unless AT&T wants to have another go at it, we may not be able to use this one over here. The BlackJack has been a strong seller (hint, hint).[Via the::unwired]
