  • "Death" returns to Final Fantasy VI [update 1]

Siliconera notes that upcoming GBA port Final Fantasy VI Advance is sorta like a director's cut. When the game appeared some years ago on Super NES, as Final Fantasy III, localization efforts toned down some of the stronger language. Thus, "death" became "doom," "pub" became "cafe," and "holy" became "pearl" (huh?). Even instances of minor nudity, pixelated as they were, got covered up.Pictured above, "Doomgaze" (SNES version name) has been properly restored to "Deathgaze" in FFVI Advance. Could the final release retain all of the original Japanese creation's edginess? Will "Terra" -- *gasp* -- be rightfully named "Tina"?Update: corrected Terra/Tina mix-up.

  • Cartridge takes a beating, keeps on ticking

Apparently an up-and-comer in the Japanese celebrity world, Haruna Anno has decided to test the toughness and durability of a couple SNES (Super Famicom) cartridges. All being Street FIghter II: The World Warrior, one was left to freeze in an icebox, another left to burn on a stove and the last was chucked down a flight of steps. The conclusion? Upon placing each game into the console and turning it on, they all worked and played fine! Amazing, especially in the case of the one subjected to fire, as it had to be filed down to actually fit into the console. So has this launched her further up the ranks of the Japanese celebrity list? We don't know, but now at least we know our cartridges might be safe if we accidentally flung them down a flight of stairs.

  • Zelda: A Link to the Past teams up with Sega on Wii VC

We're thrilled to see the seminal Super Nintendo classic, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, hitting the Wii's Virtual Console service this Monday, alongside Sega classics like Bonanza Bros and Comix Zone. Oh yeah, there's also Gain Ground. Unfortunately, as of this post, Zelda: LTTP stands alone at the top of the Wii Shop's latest VC additions, accompanied only by its 800 Wii Points price tag and the knowledge that three of its one-time foes were supposed to be there at 9am PT, but aren't. When (and if) they arrive, we expect them to be Genesis-priced at 800 Wii Points, unless they go the R-Type route and insist they're better than everyone else. Better than A Link to the Past? We think not.

It would seem that the readers of Wii Fanboy are not concerned much with NES, TG-16 and Genesis games gracing the Virtual Console. No, instead you guys want SNES and N64 titles! Doesn't really surprise us, to tell you the truth, as most of our favorite games that could possibly release on the VC are for those systems. Now, of course, the question is which games from those systems do you want?

It was on a dreary night of January, that I beheld the accomplishment of my toils. With an anxiety that almost amounted to agony, I collected the instruments of the PSP around me, that I might infuse a spark of Super Nintendo into the lifeless thing that lay at my feet. It was already one in the morning; the rain pattered dismally against the panes, and my candle was nearly burnt out, when, by the glimmer of the half-extinguished light, I saw the far superior D-Pad of the SNES function; I breathed hard, as I controlled my snowboarder with convulsive motions, agitatating my limbs.- Mary Shelly, had she access to the PSP hacking community.[Via MAXCONSOLE]

Nintendo will deal a strong hand of nostalgia to begin the New Year, as January will see Japanese Wii owners tempted by the likes of Mario Kart 64 and SNES Super Famicom's Fire Emblem: Seisen no Keifu (the last series' title to be produced by Gunpei Yokoi). Additional classics like Ice Climber, Kid Icarus and Zelda II: The Adventure of Link will fill out the first-party offerings; and new Genesis and TurboGrafx-16 titles will ensure that the Virtual Console service always has something stirring a soft spot.Which Christmas releases did you give in to?

It's no secret that we love mods. And while our focus here is on a Nintendo system beyond the SNES, we can't help but post about this excellent hybrid between technological marvels. Dubbed the Super NinTiVo, the old SNES case has been crammed full of TiVo goodness. One problem though: the harddrive has to rest outside of the case. Regardless, it's one sweet mod.[Bonus points for including Madden '94 into the mix.]

Only until we managed to force Nintendo's ingenious concoction of beeps and boops out of our heads, did we realize how shockingly hollow life was without it. The masterful music emanating from the Wii Shop Channel is quite obviously the greatest composition in the history of the universe, its infectious melody gripping you like a malfunctioning elevator door. Though you may be sprawled across a couch with a limp wrist interacting with the screen, this tantalizing tune will transfer you to a store populated by charming 8-bit sprites that move about in an eerie, staccato manner. Just moments after entering, the song will have wormed its way into your brain and taken control of your vocal chords. You're humming along, you're bobbing your head and you are happy. The happiest you've ever been in your entire life. Why not spread the joy and infect delight others with it? Refer them to this Youtube video (depicting the infamous browser hack) and tell them to shut up. Purists may find solace with RetroZone's forthcoming NES and SNES controller adapters for Wii's Virtual Console, but others will do just fine with the all-purpose Classic Controller. Before you go digging around for your old gamepads, consider that each adapter costs $19 (plus $6 S&H per order), roughly equaling the cost of Nintendo's Classic Controller, which offers greater compatibility and semi-wireless freedom.RetroZone will begin shipping the NES adapter in January, followed by the SNES adapter shortly thereafter. Both devices connect via Wii's GameCube controller ports.[Via Engadget]

With your classic NES and SNES games on the Virtual Console, you (generally) have three options. You can plug in that silly classic controller, and have the Wiimote sit awkwardly on your lap. You can use a Gamecube controller, with its a-bit-too-complex-for-old-school button layout. Or, you can turn your Wiimote on its side for simplistic button configurations. None of these solutions are quite perfect, and fail to evoke that sense on controller nostalgia for which we so long.Ready for ten tons of cool? Electronic badasses over at RetroZone have made two ever-so-simple adapters that allow you to plug in an NES or SNES controller directly into the Wii's Gamecube controller ports, for use with VC titles. That's right. Your original controllers of awesomeness will work as they once did. And only $19.99! What a bargain.

You know, most of us here at Engadget couldn't help but get a bit misty eyed when we saw that new Wii Classic Controller and recalled our fond memories of many a' night spent with the SNES' Ol' Roundy. Of course, there's always that original rectangular classic NES controller that we saved the Princess with in "Super Mario Bros.", which will always have a fond place in our hearts. Whichever you prefer (or perhaps both), RetroUSB has just released SNES and NES controller adapters for the Nintendo Wii, letting your relive your mid-1980s and early 1990s memories of button-pushing in the 21st century; when you download the original Super Mario Bros. or the very first StarFox via Nintendo's Virtual Console service, you can now play them as they were meant to be played. These controller adapters will make the perfect addition for our F-Zero party this weekend -- Captain Falcon FTW!

We're not so sure that this rumored list of 26 titles for the Wii's virtual console launch is accurate, even if it's supposedly from a "trustworthy source." But we figured this was as good a chance as any to start a discussion of what games readers are actually interested in playing on Nintendo's enormously backwards-compatible system. • Mega Man X & X2 ... at the same time

    08.14.2006

TASvideos has posted a clip of Mega Man X and Mega Man X2 being played simultaneously (using one controller). But there's a catch...The TAS community -- that's "Tool-Assisted Speedruns" -- is not about showing off, but rather, creating "movies that are beautiful to watch." Know that this clip was recorded using a controller wired into two SNES emulators and that the player used features like slow-motion and savestates to cast the illusion of a seamless playthrough in real time. So while it's not proof that an 'unassisted' gamer could play two different games with one controller, by exploiting emulation tools, the creator does show that two games can be played successfully using one set of button inputs, and without modifying the games.Do you find these sorts of projects fascinating? Is this games avant-garde movement? Or just a "silly idea"?[Via Digg]

  • Earthworm Jim swirms back to the PSP

My my, it's been a long long time since we last saw Earthworm Jim. I was still a kid when the Earthworm Jim craze had reached its peak: some excellent games on the Genesis/SNES, a freaky cartoon on the WB, and some pretty weird action figures. The series' unique gross-out humor seems poised for a big comeback, as the PSP is getting an impressively beautiful continuation. IGN grabbed some screens from a recent Atari event and had some pretty positive impressions: The spacesuit-wearing worm has indeed return. More importantly, he's returned in proper form. The game plays very much like its 2D predecessors... What makes it special, though, lies strictly with how developer Shiny Entertainment mixes those elements to form something altogether groovy and unique. You'll be sure to see more of this game on the Fanboy, as it still has a long time left in development.

  • 15 Virtual Console titles that need to be played

Gamepro has released a top 15 listing for retro games that must be revisited on the Wii. While we're fairly sure some of these won't be making the Virtual Console service for the Wii, fantasizing about which games will make the service is something we are no stranger to. Overall, we like Gamepro's choices, and wholeheartedly back up games such as: Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! - We'd personally like some vengeance against Soda Popinski for countless humiliations in the ring. His teeth are as black as his heart (too much soda, and all...). Super Mario All-Stars - Sure, it's just the classical Mario games, but they look better, there are lost levels included, and it's 3 games bundled in one. Super Metroid - Single-handedly the best Metroid title and quite arguably the greatest 2D adventure/platformer of all time. ActRaiser - Personally, I always felt the sequel was the better of the two, but the inclusion of any winged God who smites evil demons is A-OK in my book. So, in the spirit of things, what would your top 15 list for most desirable retro games on the Virtual Console look like?

  • Rumor: Nintendo holding back more controllers

    by

    06.13.2006

According to Dagbladet, Nintendo was hiding controllers from us all along! In addition to the zapper, Virtual Console gamepad, and different colored Wiimotes, Nintendo was showing replica Genesis, N64, SNES, TG16, and NES controllers that were compatible with the Wii behind closed doors during E3. This is a rumor at the moment, but honestly sounds like a good idea, that is if they have some sort of adapter available for the original controllers for these systems and don't make it mandatory for the consumer to purchase a new retro controller to be used for each system. What say you fine readers?[Via Gamers Reports]
