What's coming to Netflix in December: 'Mowgli,' 'Roma' and Springsteen
You might already be preparing to spend the holidays watching Avengers: Infinity War on repeat after it arrives on Netflix on Christmas Day, but there will be plenty of other new shows and movies for you to check out on the streaming service over the last month of the year. Among the big original movies are a version of The Jungle Book called Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle (December 7th) and Gravity director Alfonso Cuarón's Oscar contender Roma (December 14th). Another awards hopeful, Susanne Bier's Bird Box, will be available December 21st, and a Jennifer Aniston vehicle, Dumplin', debuts December 7th.
What's on your HDTV: 'Guardians of the Galaxy', 'SoA' finale, 'Marco Polo'
After racking up $771 million at the box office, Guardians of the Galaxy is coming home. It's a little different from Marvel's other superhero collaborations with Disney, but no less satisfying. This is also the week that Sons of Anarchy comes to its conclusion, and for the last time series creator Kurt Sutter explains to us why he thinks the show he wrote is so great. The third highlight is Netflix's Marco Polo, which was formerly intended for Starz but is now coming direct to streaming. With a budget said to surpass any other show outside of Game of Thrones, we'll see if all that money leads to another hit for the service -- if you'd like a reminder when it goes live just check the embedded tweet after the break. That's not all Netflix is planning though, as Parks & Recreation's Nick Offerman will debut a new stand-up comedy special this week. Football fans can enjoy the brief break in college games by tuning in for Miami's second run as a 30 for 30 subject on Saturday night, gamers will dig into Bungie's The Dark Below expansion for Destiny, and movie fans can enjoy a Criterion Collection edition of Time Bandits. Must See HDTV (December 3rd - 9th)
We're finally ready to see the latest Batman flick on Blu-ray, and while a lack of pro hockey is leaving a hole in TV schedules, there a few other viewing options. Pixar is also sending out Finding Nemo and Up on Blu-ray 3D, while special events like the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show and VGAs fill out the slate. Look below for the highlights this week, followed after the break by our weekly listing of what to look out for in TV, Blu-ray and videogames. The Dark Knight Rises The final movie in Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy comes home this week. As with every blockbuster flick in 2012, beyond the multiple types of releases there's also a deep second screen experience available, flashing extra information for fans to see while and after they watch the movie. Will it make Bane easier to understand? We can't say for sure, but this flick will probably still continue the series' trend of smashing Blu-ray sales records. ($18.99 on Amazon) VGA Ten Somehow, the Video Game awards have made it ten years, and they're celebrating it later this week on Spike TV. As part of the festivities, previous hosts like Snoop, Neil Patrick Harris and Zachary Levi will be returning to the stage. As always, there will also be promos for several new games aired during the event, check after the break for an early peek at clips for Gears of War: Judgement and The Last of Us. Must See HDTV (September 10th - 16th)
With football and new TV series premieres, we're ready to call it officially fall. Keep an eye out for brand news shows like NBC's Go On and The New Normal, as well as returning favorites like Glee on Fox and the various talent show competitions. Look below for the highlights this week, followed after the break by our weekly listing of what to look out for in TV, Blu-ray and videogames. Monday Night Football Football is back, and it's Monday night, so you know what that means. Hank Williams Jr. is no longer a part of the festivities but the action hasn't changes. We've got a doubleheader lined up with Bengals/Ravens followed by Raiders/Chargers, so wrap up those bedtime stories and get in front of the TV. Sons of Anarchy It may not rise to the level of Breaking Bad or Justified but Sons of Anarchy is one of our other favorite cable TV series, and its new season gets started this week. SAMCRO is dealing with conflict from within and, judging from the previews, out side the club as well. We'll see how the addition of Jimmy Smits to the cast affects this show. (September 11th, FX, 10PM) Weeds At long last, the Showtime series comes to an end this weekend. Some might say it should've wrapped up a couple of seasons ago, but if you're still following the Botwin clan and their assortment of friends, enemies and drug-dealing associates it's time to say goodbye. Must See HDTV (December 5th - 11th)
All you have to do is look at the calendar to know we're suddenly going to be buried under a deluge of holiday-season-specific programming. Of course, it's not all Michael Buble's Christmas Special, with unlikely sources like Syfy channel tossing in their efforts. While cable shows like Sons of Anarchy, Boss, and Boardwalk Empire wrap their seasons up, we also have a few new entries in the form of Luck, Moonshiners, and Invention USA. Check below for the highlights this week, followed after the break by our weekly listings of what to look out for in TV, Blu-ray and videogames. Sons of Anarchy It's been yet another explosive season for the boys of SAMCRO, and now it's coming to an end. As is standard for the show, main character Jax is finding himself caught between the law, rival gangs, and the loyalty to his mother, wife, and best friend, all pulling in different directions. We don't know if he will avenge his father's death in the season finale, or if the entire motorcycle club will end up in jail first, but you can bet we'll be watching to find out. (December 6th, FX, 10PM) Spike TV Videogame Awards 2011 We haven't been a big fan of the Spike Videogame Award's presentation in the past, but with the promise of a peek at BioWare's next project and an Advisory Council that again includes our good friend and Joystiq EIC Chris Grant voting on the winners, maybe this is the year things get turned around. Videogames and the people who make them deserve their due like any other industry, and Spike is at least making an effort to make sure that happens. One of the other tweaks for the 2011 show is a focus on augmented reality, so that's another thing to keep an eye out for during the broadcast. (December 10th, Spike, 8PM) Eureka / Warehouse 13 / Haven For some people it takes see It's A Wonderful Life, A Christmas Story, or Peanuts to get in the holiday spirit, but if you're a fan science fiction shows then you'll want to know these are all checking in with special holiday episodes Tuesday night. As silly as Syfy's name change has been, these shows have at least maintained, if not increased, their level of quality and have dedicated audiences. The special episodes are dropping in sort of out of the blue so we don't know what to expect, but we'll give them a look -- check out a sneak peek embedded after the break.
Netflix adds more Fox content to streaming including Glee S1, Ally McBeal
In a nice rebound from last week, Netflix is expanding its non-exclusive agreement with Fox for content, bringing older shows Ally McBeal and The Wonder Years to Watch Instantly for the first time. Also arriving are the first season of Glee and the first two seasons of Sons of Anarchy from FX with additional seasons to be added annually, as well as "a number of library movies" after their premium pay-tv windows subside. It's not exactly the cable TV competing type of deal that it just locked up with Paramount in Canada, but fans of those shows have a few more reasons to hang on to the service. Beyond the announcement a slew of new content popped up on the service today including the just-aired premiere episode of Body of Proof, BBC stuff like Top Gear and Luther, a few James Bond flicks and anime like Inuyasha and Bleach, so even if you're not a gleek (and disappointed because if Netflix and Fox are talking, the only topics of discussion should be commissioning new seasons of Firefly and Terriers) there's plenty of reasons to update that queue today.
