Not since the great Christopher Lambert's powerful, moving portrayal of Raiden the thunder god in the film adaptation of Mortal Kombat have we been this excited for a new movie based on a fighting game. Having seen the latest trailer for Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li, we think we can safely say that it will leave Mortal Kombat in the dust. It's really got everything, including characters that look absolutely nothing like their in-game counterparts, powerfully cheesy music, wildly exaggerated sound effects and spectacular explosions. And did you see the key chain advertised at the end for only ¥1,300? We are so getting one of those. If you think you can handle this level of excitement, watch the trailer after the break.[Via C3]

Finally, footage has been released for the new Street Fighter film, The Legend of Chun-Li in the form of a Japanese movie trailer. When it was originally announced we were worried that Capcom wouldn't learn from the mistakes made by the first - admittedly, rad for all the wrong reasons - flick starring JCVD. Looks like we were right. If you're clicking the jump to watch the trailer for shots of your favorite characters in Street Fighter garb then stop now. None of the characters wear costumes, really. Vega's in there somewhere but he looks kind of sad. In fact, if we were approached in a dark alley and mugged by someone who looked like this version of Vega we'd throw him coin out of pity, not so much out of fear.A while back, Producer Patrick Aiello said in a question/answer post on the movie's site that it would be silly to try and replicate the costumes from the game. We guess we understand what he means but instead of giving us some fan service they've decided to scrap it all - except for Chun-Li's hairbuns! You know, if Chris Nolan can make a dude in a rubber suit look cool with fancy camera work and lighting then maybe these cats should try something. Creativity comes to mind.

There's not much we can say to prepare you for the video after the break (which we carefully extracted from Capcom's TGS DVD). Let's go over the facts: Capcom is making a Street Fighter movie centered around Chun-Li (played by Smallville's Kristin Kreuk); that movie will be directed by Andrzej Bartkowiak (who previously helmed DOOM); it will be terrible."Whoa, whoa, whoa Joystiq!" you exclaim. "Those first two statements are, as you said, facts. But that last statement ... surely that's just your opinion." We appreciate your concern, reader, but the smallest of sneak peaks – really, just a single frame from the film – is enough to convince us. Is Chun Li wearing a mattress?

Patrick Aiello, the producer for the upcoming film Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li (starring Kristin "Lana Lang" Kreuk!), believes Street Fighter IV will launch alongside the film. Aiello tells GameDaily that the "film and game release dates will coincide." According to IMDB, the Street Fighter movie currently has a release date of February 27, 2009.Although hardcore Street Fighter fans may be upset that the game isn't coming out at the end of this year as originally announced, there's always the option of playing it in arcades at diverse locations on this little planet.%Gallery-21918%

  • No Ken or Ryu in the Street Fighter movie

Though they're probably not your favorite characters in the Street Fighterverse (that's Zangief, obviously) you probably can't imagine it without the Shake 'n' Bake of urban fisticuffs, Ken and Ryu. So it'll probably come as something of a surprise that Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li producer Patrick Aiello says that the duo won't appear in the movie.Official movie blogger Aaron Horwitz attempts do a little damage control, reminding that "Nightcrawler, Pyro and Beast" didn't show up in the first X-Men movie. It's an appropriate comparison as Nightcrawler, Pyro and Beast were the original team of X-Men. Just the three of them ... bamf-ing around, starting fires and being smart. Those we are the X-Men they had back in the 60s and they liked it.[Via AICN]

  • Capcom's makin' movies

Video games and movies frequently don't mix. Sometimes, movies pump out a Resident Evil, which goes on to produce financially successful sequels. Mostly, though, Uwe Boll ends up with them. Capcom is making sure none of that happens to their titles. Capcom is currently cozying up with Hollywood to turn more of its licenses into hit movies; and the other way around. Germaine Gioia, Capcom's new Senior VP of Licensing, is working to get Capcom more exposure in Hollywood. This way, Capcom games like Lost Planet could get decent showings on the silver screen and Capcom can work closely with studios to create games on Hollywood IPs ... which could allow them to work nicely together. Microsoft should take a page from Capcom's book in dealing with Hollywood (possibly getting together with arch-nemesis Sony to make it). By working closely with Hollywood, Capcom is taking a step toward making gaming a more socially acceptable past time. If the movies about games are frequently decent (not directed by Uwe Boll), we could see a loosening of political intolerance of the medium as Hollywood and politicians frequently are in lock-step. Plus, Capcom gets to make more money, which they aren't about to argue with.
