Sega is set to release its Genesis Mini retro console in September, with a line-up of 40 games. It revealed ten of them when it announced the system's release date last month, and now it's taken the wrapper off another bunch of titles.

Sega is offering discounts on its digital console games this month, on both PSN and XBLA. The regions, timing, and games are all different between the platforms for maximum confusion. In fact, the only thing the two sales have in common is Streets of Rage 2. Through November 29, North American PSN users will be able to get After Burner Climax for $5, and Genesis classics Streets of Rage 2, Comix Zone, and Golden Axe for $2.99 each. Sega's XBLA sale starts November 22 and runs through November 28, and offers 50% discounts on Crazy Taxi (sale price 400 Points), Sega Rally Online Arcade (400 Points), Streets of Rage 2 (200), Outrun Online Arcade (400), Happy Tree Friends (400), and Phantasy Star 2 (200).

Yes, the classic beat-em-up joined Sega's iOS library a little while back, and you can get in on the fun for US$2.99. The second iteration in the very famous 2D fighting series features Skate, Axel, Blaze and Max going to war against Mr. X and his army through all eight levels of the original game. Unfortunately, this version is short on extras. There's no Game Center integration. There is local Bluetooth multiplayer, but that's about it. The controls, as you can see above, aren't much more than serviceable, either. In other words, this is more a straight port than anything else. You can actually play the original version in Japanese, but you have to switch your device's language to Japanese, and even then, the differences aren't that big a deal. Still, Streets of Rage 2 is a solid beat-em-up title, and you might have fond memories of this one on your Sega Genesis or Sega Game Gear. If the price is too high, just hang on -- Sega routinely puts its titles on sale, and this one is likely to drop in the future.

Are you still heartbroken about the recent evisceration of the massively expanded, eight-years-in-the-making, PC freeware remake of Streets of Rage? Sega's got something of a consolation prize for you, provided you're in possession of an iPhone or iPod Touch: Streets of Rage 2 is now available on the App Store for $2.99. Sure, it's not as ridiculously bolstered with new features as the obliterated remake, however, it does feature Bluetooth multiplayer functionality, as well as the original Japanese version of the game (titled Bare Knuckle II). Also, it has the distinct advantage of being an actual thing released by Sega, making the probability of it being blinked out of existence by Sega very, very slim.

The latest venue for the same set of Genesis ports seen everywhere else is the PlayStation 3's PlayStation Network, which adds another console to the system's retro roster. Sega is releasing them all for free to PlayStation Plus members for a limited time, starting with the March 1 release of Sonic the Hedgehog, which is free to Plus members through April 5. Sonic 2, Streets of Rage 2, Golden Axe 2, Comix Zone, and Altered Beast will all follow on the day the previous game is removed. Those without Plus will have to wait for the opportunity to buy these Genesis games for $4.99 each: Sonic won't hit the normal PSN store until March 29, with the other games showing up around a month apart. You could wait for that, or you could get the Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection disc, which has all of these games and 42 more for ... $16.79.

Classic Sega games are coming to the PlayStation Network, if leaked ESRB ratings are to be believed. Streets of Rage 2, Golden Axe and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 can all be seen with new ratings from the board. These games are already available as re-released on Xbox LIVE Arcade, so it makes sense that the PlayStation Network should get them as well.Fans of Sega compilations may also want to look into the upcoming Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection, which houses a number of classic 16-bit games.

We love the ESRB. With the group constantly rating titles that have yet to be announced, it's like getting birthday presents year round. XBLArcade breaks the news that the ESRB has rated 4 new games for Xbox Live Arcade, though not all of them are "new." The three we already know about are Tempest, Mutant Storm Empire, and Fatal Fury Special. We had nearly given up hope on Fatal Fury though. We hadn't heard a peep about it since last August after all. Finally, coming out of left field is SEGA's Streets of Rage 2, a classic beat-em-up from the Genesis era.We have to admit we've been impressed by Xbox Live Arcade lately. Here's hoping Microsoft can continue the stream of new titles unabated.
